Can-Can Girls, Beaujolais Tasting Add French Flair to Gourmet Food & Wine Expo

Sometimes timing really is everything. That was certainly the case Thursday for the more than 5,000 guests in attendance at the opening night V.I.P. preview for the 14th annual Gourmet Food & Wine Expo. The four-day consumer trade show—held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre—is showcasing the wines of France, and Thursday's opening just happened to coincide with the release of this year's batch of Beaujolais Nouveau.

The timing provided show manager Jennifer Campbell with a perfect tie in for this year's theme. "France is hosting a special tasting area [in the "Apéritif à la Française" pavilion] with can-can dancers and a Beaujolais tasting," said Campbell. "Our V.I.P. night is a sponsor thank-you as well as an evening for trade and media.” All four corners of the room had activities, including a demonstration on the Food Network Stage by Roger Mooking (executive chef at Kultura and Nyood and host of Everyday Exotic) and a cocktail tasting for media representatives at the Mott's Clamato Caesar School. Wine & Food Fest Mixes Edible and Musical Offerings

FROM NEW YORK The first New York City Wine & Food Festival this weekend filled the meatpacking district—and some other areas—with celebrated chefs and foodies for a four-day celebration of all things culinary. Led by Lee Schrager, director of special events for Southern Wine & Spirits and founder of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, this Northeast series was produced by Karlitz & Company and benefited the Food Bank for New York City and Share Our Strength.

Covering a variety of topics, the weekend-long fair included more than 70 individual seminars, panel discussions, food demonstrations, cooking classes, and large-scale tasting parties. And even with food squarely center stage, the biggest events of the festival—Burger Bash, Sweet, Chelsea Market After Dark, and Midnight Music and Munchies—also provided musical entertainment, from DJs and roaming performers in elaborate costumes to a coffee psychic and an appearance from Tom Colicchio singing and strumming a guitar. 1. Wine & Cheese Show
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Wine & Cheese show prides itself on being “Toronto’s most aggressively promoted food and drink show ever.” The wine competition has become a well-known ﬁxture, with more than 500 submissions in 15 categories judged by a panel of experts. The 2008 show took place April 4 to 6 at the International Centre in Mississauga, featuring a sip-and-savour stage presented by the Food Network. MORE >>
