Lola Csullog-Fernández is offering a selection of Spanish tapas and authentic Mediterranean cuisine at Pimenton—a new shop featuring take-out items and a catering menu suitable for small meetings and events for several hundred guests. Pimenton can cater a dinner event with dishes like Spanish meatballs in white wine sauce, meat and seafood paella, and Spanish empanadas, or a lunch meeting with a selection of tapas or sandwiches stuffed with ham, provolone cheese, nicoise olives, and arugula. Csullog-Fernández is planning to offer cooking classes on site for groups of six to eight. Sherry or cheese tastings can also be arranged at the shop, which features a small retail section offering imported items such as olive oil, serrano ham, and manchego cheese.   —Susan O'Neill

George Brown College opened its new student-run restaurant the Chefs' House on Tuesday, the first training facility of its kind in Canada. Following a recent expansion of the college's center for hospitality and culinary arts, chef school director John Higgins introduced the 3,200-square-foot, ground-level restaurant and event space in a brownstone building on King Street East.

The highlight of the room is the stainless steel, open-concept kitchen, where guests can view students prepping, cooking, and plating dishes (flat-screen TVs mounted on the exposed-brick walls also show diners the process, Food Network-style). "We wanted to break down the barrier between the front and back of the house and have transparency," says Higgins. "It's not just about food, it's about education." MORE >>

Event-Ready George Brown College Restaurant Set for October Opening
The George Brown College Chef School is preparing to unveil a new student-staffed restaurant called the Chefs' House in mid-October. Located in a heritage brownstone building across from the King Street East campus, the 70-seat contemporary restaurant (along with a 16-seat private dining room) will be available for events. Locally grown produce and internationally inspired dishes will make up the menu, and the 3,200-square-foot space—designed by Peter Ng (building) and Philip Hastings (dining room)—will also house the Culinary Foundation for Chefs, an initiative created by the Ontario Hostelry Institute to showcase and educate chefs.   —Erin Letson
