In the News: Magazine Builds Revenue With Events, White House Disapproves of Destination Meeting Blacklist
|
Small Market Magazine Turns Profit With Events: Smaller titles are getting into event marketing, and for one Columbia, Missouri-based magazine, a recent focus on events has generated $400,000—30 percent of its annual revenue. Inside Columbia, a regional magazine with a circulation of only 12,000, has generated the impressive sum through ticket sales and local sponsorships for events such as food festivals, a speaker series, and show houses. Of the magazine's 14 staffers, one is devoted to special events. [Folio]
Industry Reflects on Comic-Con's Commercial Shift: On the eve of San Diego Comic-Con 2009, many are wondering how exactly the niche trade show became such a public spectacle, and Variety attributes responsibility to Angelina Jolie. The actress reportedly wanted to make a grand entrance to the event in 2002, when she was promoting the sequel to Tomb Raider, and though the city wouldn't approve her plans for arriving at the venue on horseback or by helicopter, she did stage a chopper stunt at the airport. The image didn't just make it onto blogs and industry Web sites, it was on the front page of the following Monday's USA Today. [Variety]

Smashed Cars, Hot Tub Add to Wild Vibe at Power Ball
|
The "Decadence" theme at last year’s tenth anniversary Power Ball translated into a white decor scheme and burlesque dancers. This time around, "Power Ball 11: It's One Louder" (named for a line in This Is Spinal Tap) went in a decidedly different direction: smashed cars, an outhouse/video booth, and guests helping themselves to a whole roasted pig. "We're juxtaposing low-fi, tripped-out decor with things like oysters and champagne," said Sarah Bywater, head of development at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, the site of the festivities.
Although the budget was tighter this year, Bywater said corporate support for the ball remained strong. Hugo Boss returned as the party’s lead sponsor, and a record 32 in-kind suppliers filled the gallery with displays over three days of setup. Landscape Ontario, for example, provided deciduous trees and plants to furnish the indoor space, and Castor Design brought in a Winnebago and the pig-roasting materials to help make the gallery’s south patio more than just a smoking destination.

Sixth Annual Buy Design Fund-Raiser Draws Guests With Social Media Campaign, Promises of Swag
|
In a time of economic uncertainty, Windfall Clothing Service event manager Kelly Carmichael wanted to emphasize the return on investment for guests attending (or considering attending) the clothing bank’s "Buy Design 6: In Space" fund-raiser, held Saturday at the Fermenting Cellar. “We really wanted people to know it was worth it to come,” said Carmichael, who worked with Faulhaber PR to launch a social media campaign and Web site promoting the benefit’s purpose and perks.
“Facebook and Twitter are great ways to get a dialogue going with people about the event and our organization, which is especially important in times like these," Carmichael said. The face of the Twitter campaign, BuyBarella, a character inspired by the Jane Fonda movie Barbarella, tweeted about everything from outfit ideas for the space-themed event to hints about the night’s hors d’oeuvres (like herb-crusted lamb chops), and the gift bag (stuffed with full-size beauty products from sponsor Proctor & Gamble). BuyBarella's 477 Twitter followers had a chance to win one of three sets of tickets to the benefit.

Canfar Throws 23 Dinner Parties for 800 at Bloor Street Entertains

Anyone who has arranged a dinner for 800 would surely agree the task can involve an inordinate amount of planning. But when that dinner involves 23 locations and 23 different chefs—followed by a cocktail party for 1,600 people at the Royal Ontario Museum—the planning process requires “an almost military hierarchy,” says David Vallee of David Vallee Entertains, who planned Bloor Street Entertains. The 12th annual fund-raiser for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (Canfar) took place Wednesday.
"It requires an extreme amount of pre-planning," said Vallee, who has been involved in organizing the event for the past four years. A committee of venue coordinators, each responsible for overseeing four to six venues, and an event manager at each dinner location ensure the event runs smoothly. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges. "Every year is challenging with this event because it is such a 24-headed monster," he said, noting that recruiting chefs and securing venues is a process that begins in April.

Hugo Boss Canada Relies on McNabb Roick Events
|
 | | Dawn Bellini |
|
As the director of marketing and public relations for Hugo Boss Canada, Dawn Bellini handles all advertisement components, editorial loan-outs to editors, and the planning of all of the company's events. Bellini has been with Hugo Boss since 1994 and plans roughly seven large events a year, such as the annual Boss Benefit, held in a private home for 400.
Production: "I cannot live without McNabb Roick Events. Jeff Roick is like my right hand when it comes to events. We work with him on everything—coordinating the rentals, staffing, decor, the DJ, and catering. Every event we work on he has a hand in, and he’s on the Boss Benefit committee. He even hosted my baby shower last year, he’s that close."
Sound, Lighting, Staging: "Through Jeff, we came to work with Westbury National Show Systems. When we do our fashion show for Boss Benefits, they set up the runway. They also do big concerts, so they already have the tech riders, which is what the artist requires to perform, like a certain type of piano, soundboard, and microphone. They are able to anticipate what the performer will need."

Boss' Nautical Launch

It was smooth sailing, pretty much anyway, during the invitation-only media luncheon hosted by Hugo Boss to celebrate the arrival of the “Hugo Boss II” Open 60 sailing boat in Toronto. Gusting winds prevented the full setting of the vessel’s translucent silvery-black BOSS-emblazoned sails, but McNabb Roick Events nonetheless produced a jaunty nautical-themed event at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery at the Harbourfront Centre. “We’re presenting a fun, tropical event that puts people in a sailing frame of mind,” beamed Hugo Boss marketing and PR rep, Sonya Easterbrook. “The boat, venue, decor, food, and entertainment all lend well to the atmosphere we want to create for our guests.”

Princess Margaret Hospital Benefit

For the second year, Robert and Diane Herjavec opened their upscale Bridal Path home (incidentally, the same home that Mick Jagger stays in while in town) for the now-annual Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation fund-raiser. The $1,000 per ticket affair was dubbed the Boss Benefit in recognition of Hugo Boss, which stepped up as lead event sponsor. More than 400 guests descended on the 50,000-square-foot, three-acre mansion for an evening that included a formal dinner, a silent auction, a musical performance by five-time Grammy winner John Legend, and a full-runway fashion show featuring the spring 2007 Hugo Boss collection.
