Interior Design Show Party Presents "Food as Theatre," With Performing Bartenders, Interactive Stations

For the opening night party of the 11th annual Interior Design Show, held Thursday at the Direct Energy Centre, organizers chose caterers who presented food as theatre in an effort to entertain guests at the event, which adopted an "aMUSE" theme this year. “The whole evening is certainly food and drink centric,” said event producer Marion Heintzman of Heintzman Productions. “We decided to present food as theatre so everything around the preparation and serving becomes theatre. It’s all about the visual.”

Servers on scooters delivered boxes of pizza to two Autogrill food stations; staff from Rodney’s Oyster House shucked oysters; Edo offered handmade sushi to attendees; and Peller Estates made pink icewine candy. Bartenders from Bartender One entertained guests while making drinks at a large bar located in the main aisle, and a girl dressed in white chipped away at a block of ice that encased a bottle of Belvedere Vodka on the Krups stage. Umbrellas and Rainwear Fill the CFC's Annual TIFF Barbecue

Sunday's afternoon rain didn't have a big impact on the attendance at the Canadian Film Centre's (CFC) annual barbecue, with more than 1,000 guests turning up for the 20th anniversary event on the centre's grounds. “We always try to tent quite a few areas, but we always just kind of pray for the best, and people always know to bring umbrellas if they absolutely need to," said CFC event coordinator Mark Fellion. "Most of the people who attend this event are annual attendees and they know the deal. Last year it didn’t hurt our attendance. We still had about 1,500 people attend."

Hosted each year by Canadian director and producer Norman Jewison during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the CFC barbecue is held in honour of Canadian and international filmmakers. "We invite a lot of delegates that are in town for TIFF," Fellion said. "So we never know exactly who’s going to show up ... it’s a lot of our sponsors, our alumni. It’s a good opportunity for them to network with all of these industry professionals." MORE >>

Interior Design Show Party Gets Dressed in Black

Last year’s opening-night party for the Interior Design Show took on an all-white colour scheme. The "Decadence"-themed anniversary party for this year’s I.D.S. proved to be quite the opposite, with black carpets and chandeliers, and performers in black wigs, makeup, and costumes. Creative director Ellen-Ray Hennessy of DareDen Theatre Inc. planned the large-scale event for the second year in a row, calling on her music and theatre connections to pull together a team of unique entertainers to fill the showroom at the Direct Energy Centre on Thursday night.

Hennessy said she wanted guests to be constantly reminded of the party’s theme, so she found an “underbelly of talent” from around the city, including fire performers, burlesque and modern dancers, a man on stilts, and 30 “live statues,” some decked in dresses made entirely of flowers and greenery (provided by the Dutch consulate). Street artist Mike Parsons worked on a 10-foot by 10-foot canvas, which was later purchased by a guest. MORE >>
