Vintage Luggage, Flight Attendants Bring Retro Airline Vibe to Drinks Show

Models dressed as flight attendants welcomed attendees to the 2008 Drinks Show—entitled "Come Fly With Us"—at the Queen Elizabeth Building at Exhibition Place Friday and Saturday nights. The luxury travel theme of this year's two-day event looked back to the glamourous vibe of airlines in the 1960s and '70s, and Michelle Hunt and Laura Panter of the Martini Club—the company that founded the show five years ago—concocted cocktails to match the jet-setting premise.

Fulcrum Events
took advantage of this year's larger venue (the show took place at the Distillery District in 2007) by decorating it with themed items like a model plane borrowed from the Toronto Aerospace Museum, vintage luggage, and retro flight attendant uniforms sourced from thrift and film prop houses. Even the bathroom stalls got the in-flight treatment with emergency evacuation charts posted on the doors. Zoom Airlines also held a contest for a flight to Paris. MORE >>

Wine tasting at Hart House

There are several factors to consider when choosing how to approach the decor for a wine tasting. Scented florals are out (they might interfere with the tastings) and white tables are preferred (in an effort to best show off the wines). So when it came to selecting the decor for Santé Down Under, an indoor-outdoor barbecue and tasting held to showcase the wines of Australia at the University of Toronto's Hart House on Friday, and California Cruisin', a wine tasting held at the Royal Ontario Museum on Thursday, organizers relied on large backdrops and video projections to set the scene.

Krista Slack + Associates worked with members of the Santé Toronto International Wine Festival committee to produce both events. "Really, the decor is very focused and very minimalist.... When you are doing tastings, a few things have to be taken into consideration," Slack said in an interview prior to Friday's reception. "I think thematically in terms of the space, we're utilizing some of the assets Wines of Australia have given us," she said, noting that the organization provided several printed backdrops featuring images of Australian scenery, including koala bears, the Sydney Opera House, and the outback. L.C.B.O. Launches California Wine Promo With Celebrity Look-Alikes

Celebrity impersonators mimicking Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, and Johnny Depp caused a stir in the Allen Lambert Galleria at Brookfield Place on Friday when the Liquor Control Board of Ontario launched its California Style promotion at a noon-hour event. Fake paparazzi swarmed the look-alikes, courtesy of Hollywood Heaven Look-A-Likes and Entertainment, as they arrived at the event, causing a commotion amid the lunchtime crowds in the downtown office tower. Passersby stopped and stared, some pulled out their cameras, and one person even asked the faux Jolie for her autograph. A group of visiting French teenage girls, who surrounded the Depp impersonator to snap photos, left the event giggling and squealing that they'd just met the actor.

"It was a natural to make that link, because a lot of people, when they first think of California, they think of Hollywood," said Karen McGee, the L.C.B.O.'s assistant manager of special events, of the theme for the launch, which kicked off a monthlong promotion featuring 140 California wines at 600 L.C.B.O. stores across the province. The L.C.B.O. runs 13 promotions each year, although not all are as large as Friday's free public event, which drew an estimated 1,000 people. MORE >>
