To close LG Fashion Week, designers Chris Tyrell and Jim Searle of Hoax Couture partnered with the Fashion Design Council of Canada to present the Dare to Wear Love Gala, showcasing fashions from 25 Canadian designers in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Friday's gala coincided with a fund-raising campaign dubbed A Dare to Remember, an initiative spearheaded by the charity that encourages Canadians to accept dares and collect pledges for the nonprofit organization, which works to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

In the spirit of the campaign, event producers Hoax Couture provided designers like Evan Biddell, Brian Bailey, and Linda Lundström with fabric sourced from countries throughout Africa and dared them to create a design for the runway show. Celebrity models including singer Jully Black, eTalk host Traci Melchor, and MTV Canada host Jessi Cruickshank walked the catwalk. MORE >>

When Lucian Matis—winner of the Fashion Design Council of Canada's first-ever F.D.C.C. Designer Development Fund—presented his spring 2010 collection on the final day of LG Fashion Week, he opened the show with a model dressed in a long watercolour clown-print dress. Following his lead, event firm Candice&Alison created a circus-inspired vibe for the designer's after-party, which drew a crowd of 300 to Oasi Restaurant on Friday night.

"Lucian's look is very artisan and couture. It's a bit avant-garde. So the venue we chose has Baroque decor but is very modern and edgy," said Candice Chan. "We took the circus theme and made it very opulent." MORE >>

With a new two-acre site at the corner of King and Shaw, the Fashion Design Council of Canada had more lead time and more space to set the scene for LG Fashion Week this season. The venue, a former car dealership and the future site of the DNA phase 3 condominium development, includes a 1,000-seat runway, a gala showroom for intimate events and V.I.P. receptions, and a media loungeall housed inside the existing structure. A glass-front tent attached to the building houses the Fashion Environment where guests can mingle between shows; a separate hair and makeup tent sits on the west side of the lot.

“The flow is a little bit different this year,” said Rob Dittmer of Three Events, the company responsible for the event design. “We opened it up a bit because it is so jam packed every year.” This season, the Fashion Environment includes a main bar, an all-white V.I.P. lounge sponsored by Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Thomas George Estates, the all-black Lincoln Luxury Lounge, and sponsor activations from the likes of LG Electronics, L'Oreal Paris, Schick Quattro, and Rowenta Beauty. "When you find another brand you work well with, it's a perfect opportunity to express it on the runway," said Hewson, Bustle’s creative director and a Project Runway Canada judge. The Fashion Design Council of Canada kicked off LG Fashion Week with four events Monday, including the first-ever runway show in Frank Gehry's Walker Court at the Art Gallery of Ontario and an opening night gala that showcased event sponsors LG Electronics Canada and L'Oréal Paris, and a partnership with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

Fashion Week's 21st consecutive season got under way with an afternoon show at AGO featuring the spring 2010 collection from VAWK by designer Sunny Fong, who won season two of Project Runway Canada. In addition to the 200 fashion media in attendance, fans of Fong were invited to line up at the gallery for a first-come first-serve standing spot to view the collection, which was inspired by French Polynesia and titled Tatto Hibiscus. Fong's show was also streamed live on his Web site—a first for LG Fashion Week. MORE >>

LG Product Launch, L'Oréal Retrospective, Shakespearean Fashions Kick Off Fashion Week
The Fashion Design Council of Canada (F.D.C.C.) presents the spring 2010 collections starting today, as LG Fashion Week gets under way at a new venue on King Street West with the Wear Love Alive gala, a celebration showcasing presenting sponsors LG Electronics Canada and L'Oréal Paris.

The evening includes an event dubbed LG Cinematic Style, which will feature the launch of a new SL80 television at the LG booth in the Fashion Environment. Guests will then watch a presentation offering a retrospective look at the 100-year history of L'Oréal Paris, followed by a Shakespearean-themed runway collection presented by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. "The Stratford Festival archives have been turned into current looks...fashion is not original, it’s us that change," F.D.C.C. president Robin Kay said in a recent interview. MORE >>

Toronto Fashion Week's New Venue Offers More Space, Additional Prep Time

After four seasons in the tents at Nathan Phillips Square, LG Fashion Week—which takes place October 19 to 24—is on the move. And, according to Robin Kay, president of the Fashion Design Council of Canada, the new venue on King Street West has already proved beneficial. "I’m now working in a live space. The tents are up and I can walk through with sponsors and designers who are actually able to see, instead of imagine, what it’s going to be. They were placing a lot of trust on squiggle drawings," Kay said.

The two-acre site near King and Shaw streets has also enabled organizers to expand the event by 400 seats. "We were at capacity at Nathan Phillips. We had to turn people away. We have 1,000 seats here," she said. "The Fashion Environment where everyone goes to mingle is about 4,000 square feet larger, too." MORE >>

F.D.C.C. Confirms New King West Site for LG Fashion Week
The Fashion Design Council of Canada confirmed Friday that LG Fashion Week is moving to a new location at 1030 King St. West in October. "The event has grown significantly and we are exhilarated by the opportunity to expand the space and allow for more participating designers, [larger] audiences, and to keep our runway to the world totally fresh and current," F.D.C.C. president Robin Kay said in a statement.

The F.D.C.C. will present the spring 2010 collections October 19 through 24 on a two-acre site at King and Douro streets. The layout will include a series of tents and the permanent structure on the site (formerly a car dealership), which will enable organizers to create a 15,000-square-foot networking environment and a larger runway than was possible at Nathan Phillips Square. Fall Preview: What Toronto Event Pros Are Working on This Season
With the unofficial end of summer now behind us (that would be Labour Day), event professionals are looking to the fall—a traditionally busy time—to see how the economic recovery will help the industry rebound from what has so far been a pretty slow year. We asked a group of local planners and vendors what they have in the works for the coming months. Here are some highlights.

Exclusive Affair Rentals is busy preparing itself for what is shaping up to be a very busy fall season. We are currently working on a number of very exciting projects and we are cautiously optimistic that the downturn is coming to an end. We were recently awarded an exclusive contract to supply rentals to the stunning new Telus Centre for Performance and Learning at the Royal Conservatory of Music and are busy with preparations for the premiere launch. We consider it a real privilege to be affiliated with what will surely be one of the most sought-after event spaces in Toronto. The venue strikes an amazing balance between classic and modern architecture, and we look forward to introducing new products designed to add cohesiveness to the space."

Anik Gagnon Leverages L'Oréal's Luminato and Fashion Week Sponsorships to Reach Consumers

L’Oréal Canada has been involved with the Toronto art festival Luminato for three years. As the festival's presenting sponsor, the company—which includes the Garnier, Giorgio Armani, Maybelline, and L'Oréal Paris brands—has coordinated initiatives each year, bringing on Giorgio Armani for the festival's opening night party and installing a L'Oréal Paris makeup tent at Yonge-Dundas Square. Anik Gagnon, communications director for L'Oréal Paris, spoke to us about how she uses initiatives like the makeup tent to reinforce brand identity.

What was it about last year’s experience that made you decide to participate in Luminato again this year?
L'Oréal Paris did a tent at Yonge-Dundas last year, and we're doing exactly the same thing this year. Our brand strategy is to really align ourselves with fashion and to show the expertise of our beauty experts. Our vision with that tent was to take everything we do with Fashion Week and with Project Runway Canada and bring that backstage feel to the street. Last year we conducted 6,500 makeovers [over three days]; the success was so great that we decided to do it again. MORE >>
