Luminato Lineup Includes Nine-Hour Multimedia Show
Organizers of the 10-day Luminato Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity—set to take place June 5 to 14—announced the theatre and dance program for the third annual event. Festival highlights will include the North American premiere of Robert Lepage’s nine-hour epic Lipsynch, which tells the story of nine interconnected lives over the span of 70 years. (The play includes four intermissions and one extended meal break.)

“With 50 percent of our theatre and dance program commissioned or co-commissioned by Luminato, the festival continues to make significant investments in local, national, and international artistic work,” said artistic director Chris Lorway. “This year’s theatre and dance lineup once again includes a full range of high-quality presentations that Luminato is proud to share with the city and the world.” MORE >>

Luminato splashed its logo on banners across Toronto for 10 days this month as the second annual festival of arts and creativity hit the city. And, as the presenting sponsor, L'Oréal Paris—and several of its group brands—became just as prominent around town, thanks to a range of events including free makeovers, the opening-night reception for a photography exhibit at Brookfield Place, and the V.I.P. opening-night cocktail gala at the Royal Ontario Museum, sponsored by Giorgio Armani.

Nicolas Marullo, president and C.E.O. of event management firm Cinco—which produced all of L'Oréal's Luminato events—said the company wanted to ensure "the activation of the brands of L'Oréal are in synergy with Luminato. They're looking to be in sync with what Luminato is doing, rather than just being another sponsor." The Cinco team worked with L'Oréal to tailor each event to the presenting brand. "The brands have different DNA. They have a different image and they have different goals and objectives, so it's very interesting to create environments that will bring out the best in each brand," he said. MORE >>

Luminato Opening Night Party Lights Up the ROM

A crowd of 1,500 invited guests gathered at the Royal Ontario Museum Friday for a cocktail party to launch the second annual Luminato Festival of Arts and Creativity. In addition to highlighting several aspects of the festival's 2008 programming—including a performance of Black Watch (a drama about Scottish soldiers in Iraq) at the Varsity Arena—the event included a party within a party in the form of a reception for a select group of V.I.P.s sponsored by Giorgio Armani. “Our presenting partner is L’Oréal, and Giorgio Armani is one of their key brands. It seemed like a perfect complement for our opening-night party,” said Luminato's vice president of development, Trish McGrath, who planned the event in conjunction with Barbara Hershenhorn of Party Barbara Co.

Organizers selected a new venue for the 2008 kickoff (the opening-night party for the inaugural event took place at BCE Place) to accommodate the high number of guests, which included sponsors, media, business leaders, and government officials. “Certainly the ROM is a beautiful venue, and we knew that we needed a very large space that could be used with program surprises throughout the party,” McGrath said. “In addition, we have a lot of programming up in that area [of the city during the festival], so it just seemed like a natural fit.”

How Do You Ensure That Staffers Treat Guests Well?
Waiters from Great Performances

An event could have exquisite flowers, food prepared by a world-famous chef, and Oscar-presenter-worthy gift bags, but if a check-in person is less than friendly or the caterwaiters are standing around chatting, that’s what guests will remember. So how do you make sure service is up to par when there are so many people performing so many different tasks?

Gregory Boroff, senior vice president of external relations for the Food Bank for New York City, says a thorough interview process for volunteers is a big part of how the nonprofit keeps its quality of service (and proceeds from events) high. “We don’t send out mass emails asking who would like to volunteer for an event. Everyone is hand-picked. When people say they want to volunteer, we meet them first to see if it’s a good fit between the person and the organization,” he says. “We make sure they are friendly, that they understand what our organization is about and what we try to accomplish. Are they are there to help [us], or to further a personal agenda?” While many volunteers want to work the celebrity-studded Can-Do Awards dinner, Boroff says those jobs are often reserved for people who have proven themselves in other positions, like working in the office, or at another event. Local Chefs Create Performance-Inspired Menus for Luminato
Seven local chefs will serve dinners inspired by artist programs at the Luminato festival in June. Restaurateur Michael Rubino of Rain paired up with Daniels/Stephenson, a PR and production company, to present the idea of a Luminato dinner series to Tony Gagliano, the arts festival's co-founder.

"Chefs are performers and artists, and we saw an opportunity for them with Luminato," Kate Alexander Daniels, co-president of Daniels/Stephenson, said in an interview. "This is a pioneer series that we hope to grow and broaden in scope." MORE >>

Telus Backs Luminato Arts Festival
Telus has signed on to sponsor a slate of events taking place during the opening weekend of Luminato—Toronto Festival of Arts & Creativity, organizers announced today. The telecommunications company, which was also a sponsor in 2007, the festival's inaugural year, is also presenting a visual art installation called Slow Dancing this year. The installation by David Michalek will be on display at Hart House field on the University of Toronto campus throughout the festival, which takes place for 10 days beginning June 6.

"We are delighted to welcome back Telus as a major partner for the 2008 festival. One of Luminato's founding artistic principles is to make the festival widely accessible and to facilitate participation from people of all ages and backgrounds," Luminato C.E.O. Janice Price said in a statement. "Thanks to our many private, corporate, and government supporters, over 80 per cent of Luminato's programming is free. We thank Telus for supporting such an integral part of this year's free public celebrations, and for helping to make Luminato's opening weekend one of the biggest public parties in the city's history." Luminato Receives Funding Boost
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty handed out $2.7 million in pre-election grants to several local arts groups yesterday, including a $1 million gift to Luminato, a 10-day arts festival that will take place this June for its second year. But there was no money for institutions like the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, or the Canadian Opera Company in yesterday's announcement, The Toronto Star reports.

"It's great to have a down payment for Luminato, but there are other outstanding requests from other national institutions in Toronto that are waiting for their cheques," Toronto Councillor Kyle Rae said, noting that the federal government was expected to address some of the $50 million shortfall facing the AGO, ROM, and COC due to recent capital expansions at each of the facilities.   —Susan O'Neill

Heat, oppressive humidity, and a heavy rainstorm threatened to disrupt Telus’ invitation-only dinner to kick off Toronto’s new festival of arts and creativity, Luminato. Telus is a major sponsor of the 10-day event. Fortunately, the rain subsided shortly before the McNabb Roick Events-designed affair got underway, and double good fortune, the precipitation cut the temperature down to a bearable level. Staff from the Butler Did It signaled the start of the proceedings by opening the doorway to the venue: a huge white tent from http://**MYSITEPATH**/##MYMARKETS##/content/resource/r789126##END## in the parking lot of the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. The path inside traveled between two massive white urns filled with green, white, and fuchsia foliage. A decor highlight was the row of low white planter boxes containing tall clear tubes with bouffant florals bursting from the tops. The planter boxes served as a wall separating the lounge space from the dining area. Large brandy glasses filled with green orchids, lime-coloured moss, and silver balls from San Remo Florists topped square white cocktail tables from Signature Rentals in the lounge. A simple white bar emblazoned with Telus’ purple flower logo occupied one end of this space, while a collection of white leather lounge furniture formed a small seating area at the other end.
