Cyclists in Four Canadian Cities Promote 2010 Ride to Conquer Cancer

Hundreds of cyclists dressed in yellow jerseys converged on street corners in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver at 1:05 p.m. Thursday to strike a pose and raise awareness for the 2010 Ride to Conquer Cancer fund-raiser as part of a promotional event planned by CauseForce Inc.
In Toronto, more than 120 riders gathered at the northwest corner of Queen and Bay streets for the public launch of the two-day ride in support of the Campbell Family Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital. The cyclists made a visual statement by raising their bikes overhead in unison for 60 seconds—a gesture meant to reflect the "Strength in Numbers" motto for the event, which takes place here on June 12 and 13.

Motoamoré Fund-Raiser Combines Rock 'n' Roll Gala With Track Day at Mosport

For the sixth annual Motoamoré—an automobile and rock 'n' roll-themed fund-raiser for the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation and designed as a tribute to Rob Muzzo—organizers held a car rally and gala dinner at Downsview Park on June 6 and a track day at Mosport International Raceway last Thursday.
"It started because my brother was diagnosed with bladder cancer at Princess Margaret Hospital," said Marc Muzzo, chair of the Muzzo Family Charitable Foundation. "When he was still around we decided we wanted to give back to the hospital. So we organized Motoamoré, which was basically a day similar to this. It was a track day. Nobody in my family were golfers so we weren’t doing a golf tournament."
Muzzo said the family, which is prominent in the city's development industry, knew a lot of people who owned a lot of nice cars, but not all of them knew how to handle them at high speeds. "We brought in professional drivers to coach the people on how to drive the cars," he said of the event, which was held at the race track for the first four years. To mark the fifth anniversary in 2008, Devan, the event planning firm that manages the fund-raiser, changed the format to include a gala dinner at a separate venue.

Pencer Brain Trust Gala Chooses "Happy" Look, With Oversize Balloons, Orange Blooms
|
In 2008, organizers of the annual gala in support of the Pencer Brain Trust dressed the Artifacts Room at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex almost entirely in black to coincide with the evening's "Noir" theme. This year, event designer Bill Fulghum filled the venue with eye-popping colour for Wednesday's cocktail party, which adopted a "Simply Chic" theme. "The starting point was trying to be the antithesis of last year," Fulghum said. "I wanted to make it happy. I wanted it to be fun and playful and irreverent and still have that element of sophistication."
Fulghum, who's been collaborating with event consultant Bonnie Gottlieb on the annual gala for the past five years, chose an orange and white palette for what was the ninth annual fund-raiser to benefit the Gerry & Nancy Pencer Brain Tumor Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital. (The couple established the trust after Gerry was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 1997.) "It's clean and simple," Fulghum said of the colour scheme. "Orange is a happy colour."

Parisian Hotel Inspires Violet-Themed Decor for "Most Wanted" Benefit

For the third annual “Most Wanted” fashion event—a fund-raiser held Friday in honour of Concetta Guglietti at Eagles Nest Golf Club—Erika Larva of Monarch Events Group arranged an exclusive presentation of Escada’s pre-fall collection for a crowd of 275 guests. The collection, which included 25 pieces that had not been shown on a runway outside of Munich (where the fashion house is based), was shipped from New York last week. But two days prior to the runway show, held in a tent on the club's grounds, the designer shipment had yet to arrive. “It got stuck at customs,” Larva said. “We were freaking out…we only did the fittings yesterday.”
The event, hosted by Fashion File’s Adrian Mainella and held in support of the gynecological cancer department at Princess Margaret Hospital, also featured designs by V Hazelton and Greta Constantine. “We always want to inject a Canadian component, and Greta Constantine is so hot," said Larva. "When we choose who to present, it’s important we choose a designer the audience will enjoy.”

Ballet Performances Raise Awareness of Fund-Raising Walks in Six Canadian Cities
|

Ballet dancers entertained shoppers with performances in six malls across Canada on Wednesday in an effort to raise awareness of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer—a 60-km fund-raising walk that takes place annually in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, and Vancouver. CauseForce, an event planning firm that works with nonprofit organizations, coordinated the publicity stunts in each of the cities.
At each location, 27 dancers performed, with three of the ballerinas wearing pink tutus (the rest wore black) to emphasize the fact that breast cancer impacts one in nine Canadian women. Dancers from the George Brown School of Dance promoted the Toronto walk—which benefits the Campbell Family Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital and takes place from September 11 to 13—with a performance at First Canadian Place.

Chocolate Ball Adopts Old Hollywood Theme With Big Band, Ballroom Dancers
|

For the third annual Chocolate Ball, held Friday at the Palais Royale, event producer Joey Cee wanted to recreate the glamour of Old Hollywood with a cocktail party for 450 guests. He used minimal decor to dress the ballroom. "I love this venue...when I saw all the chocolate colours and the retro decor, I said, 'This was made for me. This is made out of chocolate.'"
Cee said he reinvents the concept for the ball by switching up the theme annually. This year he called upon the Toronto All-Star Big Band Orchestra and the team from Capital Dance Productions—which conducted demonstrations of swing, tango, tap, Charleston, and ballroom dancing routines—to bring his "Puttin' on the Glitz" theme to life.

When it came to choosing a designer to feature at this year's "Most Wanted" fashion event—held yesterday at Eagles Nest Golf Club in Maple—the choice was obvious, says Erika Larva of Monarch Events Group. “Escada was Concetta’s favourite, so that was an obvious choice,” Larva said in reference to Concetta Guglietti, the woman who inspired the evening. Guglietti passed away following a battle with ovarian cancer two years ago. Her son Marco and his cousin Jim DeGasperis founded the event—which benefits the gynecological cancer department at the Princess Margaret Hospital—in her honour.
“We decided that a fashion show would be a great idea,” DeGasperis said. “She was very fashion-oriented, so we thought, what a great idea to do a fashion show in her honour.” DeGasperis said the pair plans to add new elements to the event each year. New items this year included white T-shirts with the "Most Wanted" logo, and CDs. The event raised $40,000 last year, DeGasperis said, adding, “This year we’re on track to raise $70,000.”

Celebrities and entertainers took turns under the runway spotlight for the Cocouture Fashion Show: Men in Brown, part of Toronto’s second-annual Chocolate Festival Week. The event, held at the Palais Royale, raised funds for prostate cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital.
Journalist and former Golden Glove Champion Spider Jones, television celebrity Mike Bullard, and Canadian Idol judges Farley Flex and Zack Werner were among those who donated their time to the worthy cause. Clothing suppliers for the fashion show included Bogarts, Buffalo Jeans, Lacoste Boutique, and Gino’s Fashion. Gotstyle provided clothing and also chipped in a pair of cufflinks for each gift bag.
In addition to supplying the venue, Palais Royale contributed staff, accent candles, tables and chairs, and the audiovisual system. Bono impersonator Matt Ester and electric violinist Dr. Draw provided live entertainment, while Ben Melbye from Hey DJ! supplied DJ services. Mobile spa company Spadirect invited guests to indulge in back messages and chocolate hand messages.
The fashion show ended on a solemn note. One by one, producer Joey Cee and the participating celebrities and entertainers traversed the catwalk, each carrying a sign identifying a close friend or relative who had lost their battle with cancer.

For the second year, Robert and Diane Herjavec opened their upscale Bridal Path home (incidentally, the same home that Mick Jagger stays in while in town) for the now-annual Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation fund-raiser. The $1,000 per ticket affair was dubbed the Boss Benefit in recognition of Hugo Boss, which stepped up as lead event sponsor. More than 400 guests descended on the 50,000-square-foot, three-acre mansion for an evening that included a formal dinner, a silent auction, a musical performance by five-time Grammy winner John Legend, and a full-runway fashion show featuring the spring 2007 Hugo Boss collection.
