To mark its fifth anniversary, LouLou staged a Birthday Block Party in Yorkville Wednesday, offering retail discounts, cocktails, live music, giveaways, and an after-party at Moroco Chocolat. The magazine partnered with eight retailers—Banana Republic, BCBG, Gap, Guess, Joe Fresh, Puma, Town Shoes, and Winners—to host the event.
“LouLou magazine hosts shopping parties all the time. That’s what LouLou is all about, it’s about shopping rather than fashion. So we thought for our fifth anniversary what better way to celebrate what LouLou is than blowing it out and doing a whole bunch of shopping parties on the same day,” said Toronto market editor Liv Judd. “Everybody really embraced it. It just exploded. We are doing eight shopping parties all on the same night.”

ROM Channels Miami's Delano Hotel for PROM Gala
|
Just one week after the first day of spring, the fourth annual PROM event at the Royal Ontario Museum attempted to bring some Miami heat straight from South Beach. Called "PROM IV: Ocean Drive" and hosted by the museum's Young Patron's Circle, the benefit transformed the museum’s Samuel Hall Currelly Gallery and the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal to look like the famous Delano Hotel and flew in two DJs who play South Beach clubs—DJ Mateo and Canada's own DJ JoJo Flores—to spin tunes throughout the night.
“It was like a stay-cation,” said Candice Best of Best PR Boutique, who co-chaired the event with Jennifer Bassett. “Guests experienced all of the heat and energy of what happens in the Delano Hotel on a Saturday night—but at the ROM.” Organizers drew inspiration from the museum’s new Schad Gallery of Biodiversity, which will house a live coral reef and opens May 12.

Canadian Liver Foundation Targets Teens With New Gala
|
The Canadian Liver Foundation is targeting teens with the first-ever LiveRight Gala, set to take place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre April 4. The event is being designed to educate parents and their teenage children about the health issues associated with hepatitis. "Since hepatitis can affect young and old alike, it is an important health issue for parents to be aware of for themselves as well as for their children. By involving both teens and parents in the event, we want to help facilitate a dialogue between the generations," said Sally Byun of DDB Public Relations, which is handling media for the event.
MuchMusic personality Sabrina Jalees will cohost the event with the winner of a contest being thrown by the foundation. The gala will include activities like the Gibson Guitar Jam Zone, a video game room, a removable-tattoo parlor, photo booths, tarot card readers, silent/live auctions, and raffles. The main stage, which will be flanked by a half pipe, will feature performances by Canadian indie rockers Tokyo Police Club, a dance performance by Twisted Ankles Crew, a fashion show featuring designers such as Ed Hardy, and a skate board and BMX bike demonstration. Proceeds from the gala—sponsored by Crush, Bruce Power, Ed Hardy, Puma, Guess, Roxy, and Elmer Olsen Model Management—will be used to expand the foundation's youth education and prevention programs. —Susan O'Neill

Gift Suites Fill the Gladstone for Rockstar Hotel Promotion
|
Artists in town for the 19th annual MuchMusic Video Awards filled gift bags with products from brands like Puma, Fido, and Zune on Saturday at the fourth installment of Rockstar Hotel, produced by District Lifestyle Marketing. The event—launched at the Juno Awards in Saskatoon in 2007 and held at Calgary's Junos again this year—made its second MMVA appearance at the Gladstone Hotel on the eve of the award show.
"It's a total takeover. We've got it top to bottom this year," John Price, director of brand partnerships for Y Syndicate (DLM's parent company), said of the hotel. "Last year we got around to securing the venue a little bit late, so there were some folks who had booked rooms. There was one couple on their honeymoon. To their surprise, they found themselves partying with Maroon 5." This year, the Gladstone's main floor housed performance spaces, the second-floor rooms held the gift suites, and the third floor included a number of artist rooms where visiting celebrities could go to get away from the 700 invited guests. "It's very much that type of person who lives, works, and plays downtown," Price said of the guest list. "It is a closed list, so you do have to be in the know to receive an invite."
