The Royal Ontario Museum unveils a new exhibition Saturday entitled "The Nature of Diamonds," which explores the centuries-old fascination with the glittering gem and its cultural significance. Along with sections explaining how diamonds are mined, cut, and marketed, the buzzed-about attraction is the steel gem vault brought in for the exhibition to display historical pieces such as the 407-carat Incomparable Diamond, the third largest in the world. Outside the vault, paintings, books, and a jewel case full of rings will illustrate the diamond's early history and style in India, and move on to the 20th century, where the stone is more commonly associated with Hollywood celebrities. Canadian diamonds will also be showcased. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more who book two weeks in advance. The museum can also accommodate private tours for groups of 10 or more. The exhibition runs through March 22.   —Erin Letson

The Royal Ontario Museum has unveiled another part of its Michael Lee-Chin Crystal addition with two new third-floor spaces—the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery and the Wirth Gallery of the Middle East. The Wirth Gallery, named after philanthropist Albert Wirth and curated by Krzysztof Ciuk, includes more than 1,000 Middle Eastern artifacts, including a hand-ax from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and a Babylonian glazed brick wall. The Ondaatje Gallery, curated by Deepali Dewan, includes nine exhibit areas featuring hand-crafted pieces, art, and historical items like a 15th-century Kalpasutra manuscript.   —Erin Letson

Luminato Receives Funding Boost
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty handed out $2.7 million in pre-election grants to several local arts groups yesterday, including a $1 million gift to Luminato, a 10-day arts festival that will take place this June for its second year. But there was no money for institutions like the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, or the Canadian Opera Company in yesterday's announcement, The Toronto Star reports.

"It's great to have a down payment for Luminato, but there are other outstanding requests from other national institutions in Toronto that are waiting for their cheques," Toronto Councillor Kyle Rae said, noting that the federal government was expected to address some of the $50 million shortfall facing the AGO, ROM, and COC due to recent capital expansions at each of the facilities.   —Susan O'Neill

Canfar Cancels Party Due to Bomb Threat

A bomb scare outside the Royal Ontario Museum forced organizers of Bloor Street Entertains, the annual fund-raiser for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (Canfar), to cancel the party portion of its event on Wednesday, November 28. The museum’s new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal addition, the site of the party and silent auction, was closed off for security reasons as police shut down the surrounding roads to investigate.

The police later determined that the bomb was a hoax, an art exhibit planted by a student at the Ontario College of Art and Design. “Last Wednesday was a sad day for Canfar," said Elissa Beckett, executive director of Canfar, in a statement. "The cancellation of the party as part of Bloor Street Entertains leaves us short $100,000 in funding for AIDS research."

The organization launched an online auction at Canfar's Web site, beginning at 2 p.m. today, in an effort to make back the money lost from the cancelled event. The auction will run for one week.

Prior to the bomb scare, the black-tie gala's guests dined in several high-end stores along Bloor Street. Tiffany & Company, Holt Renfrew, and Liss Gallery were transformed into intimate eating establishments to help raise money for AIDS research. MORE >>

Museum Guests Play With Ancient Artifacts in New Space
"Fact? or Fiction?" is the museum's signature benefit.
Photo: Jill Kitchener for BizBash
The Royal Ontario Museum's new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal addition served as the backdrop on Wednesday night for a high-stakes mind game in support of R.O.M. research. The social and intellectual event that is the museum's signature "Fact? or Fiction?" fund-raiser began with a cocktail reception for more than 350 guests in the Hyacinth Gloria Chen Crystal Court.

The 11th annual event, sponsored by Sentry Select, challenged the crowd to test their wits in a battle with the museum's curatorial staff. Twenty tables, each bearing a mysterious artifact from the R.O.M.'s collection, were laid out in the majestic Samuel Hall Currelly Gallery adjoining the Crystal Court. The object of the game: to discover which of the two curators was telling the truth about the artifact in question at each of the tables. Participants were encouraged to ask questions about the descriptions given in an effort to determine which was fact and which was fiction. MORE >>
