The Tastemakers Lounge

Sponsored lounges have popped up in the Bloor-Yorkville area to give celebrities and media a place to relax and pick up swag during the Toronto International Film Festival. Here's a look at a few of the lounges around town, many of which have added charitable components this year.

The Tastemakers Lounge, produced by Rock-it Promotions, adopted a "Peace, Love, and Film" theme for its fifth installment, held in the Britannia Room at the Intercontinental Toronto Yorkville. Tastemakers founders Debra Goldblatt and Leesa Butler called on Croma Design Inc. to create a relaxed vibe for the lounge, intended to serve as a respite for celebrities in town to promote films and to expose visiting stars to brands. "We wanted to do something that was special and timely, something that would unite people around a theme globally, and peace seemed like something everybody could get behind," Butler said. MORE >>

In a time of economic uncertainty, Windfall Clothing Service event manager Kelly Carmichael wanted to emphasize the return on investment for guests attending (or considering attending) the clothing bank’s "Buy Design 6: In Space" fund-raiser, held Saturday at the Fermenting Cellar. “We really wanted people to know it was worth it to come,” said Carmichael, who worked with Faulhaber PR to launch a social media campaign and Web site promoting the benefit’s purpose and perks.

“Facebook and Twitter are great ways to get a dialogue going with people about the event and our organization, which is especially important in times like these," Carmichael said. The face of the Twitter campaign, BuyBarella, a character inspired by the Jane Fonda movie Barbarella, tweeted about everything from outfit ideas for the space-themed event to hints about the night’s hors d’oeuvres (like herb-crusted lamb chops), and the gift bag (stuffed with full-size beauty products from sponsor Proctor & Gamble). BuyBarella's 477 Twitter followers had a chance to win one of three sets of tickets to the benefit. MORE >>

Canadian Sex and the City Premiere Party Re-Creates New York Street Scene

New York City—often referred to as the fifth leading lady in Sex and the City—played a starring role in the after-party for the film’s Canadian premiere at the Toronto School of Circus Arts last night. The Big Apple featured prominently in the party for 650 guests with images of the Manhattan skyline projected onto the bare concrete walls, a yellow cab parked in the middle of the venue, and an ice sculpture of the Empire State Building in the centre of the main martini bar.

“The whole premise of the event is black and pink, and the whole underlying theme is obviously New York,” said Suzanne Turnbull of McNabb Roick Events, who, along with Jeffry Roick, collaborated with Carrie Wolfe of Alliance Films (the movie's Canadian distributor) to create what Turnbull called a "glamourous party in a New York street.” MORE >>
