Spice Route Features Asian Antiques, Outdoor Koi Pond

Nick Di Donato of the Liberty Entertainment Group and Charles Khabouth of Ink have collaborated on a second venue following the opening of Tattoo Rock Parlour, their first joint venture, which launched late last year. The pair opened the doors to Spice Route, a bistro-bar on King Street West, on May 1. The pan-Asian restaurant features 8,000 square feet of space inside—including two private rooms—and a 3,000-square-foot patio that looks onto the street and wraps around the east side of the building.

Designed by Nadia Di Donato, Liberty Entertainment Group's creative director, Spice Route incorporates a mix of Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Indian aspects. The entranceway features antique teak Asian doors, flanked by two water urns and flaming torches. "We're not going to do any signage. I think it's going to speak for itself," Di Donato said during a tour. "People are going to know where it is." Inside, many of the artifacts that dress the space are imports. But several pieces, including the hand-carved Burmese goddess that graces the reception area, are from Di Donato's personal collection of Asian antiques. MORE >>

Sponsors Fill Fashion Week Tents With Product Displays, Guest Lounges, and a Cocktail Bar

With all the product giveaways and eye-catching displays, it's hard not to notice who's backing L’Oréal Fashion Week—which kicked off Monday and runs until Saturday—at Nathan Phillips Square. Makeup artists roaming through the main tent offer lip touchups courtesy of L’Oréal, servers dressed in orange wigs hand out bottles of Orangina at mobile soda carts, and guests can stop to shop at a jewelry stand featuring designs from Foxy Originals.

Additional displays include a Travel Alberta exhibit promoting tourism in the province, Fashion Television's booth—where Jeanne Beker conducts postshow interviews with each designer—and a display from the Italian Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the Talenti Moda Milano show, featuring designs by students from four fashion schools in Milan. In support of Rethink Breast Cancer, Schick Quattro is offering women the opportunity to have a photo taken of their breasts for display on the Booby Wall, a virtual, interactive exhibit created to educate women about early breast cancer detection. Fashion Press Mingle at Launch Party in Holt Renfrew's Handbag Hall

More than 250 guests made the trip from the tents in Nathan Phillips Square to Holt Renfrew's flagship store on Bloor Street on Monday for a media cocktail reception to launch L’Oréal Fashion Week. The party, which event sponsor Holt Renfrew hosts every season, followed five afternoon shows, including collections from Project Runway Canada winner Evan Biddell and up-and-coming Canadian designer Mellinda-Mae Harlingten.

Holt director of special events Gwen Gibson created the feel of a cocktail lounge in Holt's handbag hall on the main floor. "We try to convert as much as we can [in the store]," she said. "We lower the lights and put out votives." Gibson also had a backdrop—printed by Astral Media, featuring two official Fashion Week posters and its tagline "Wear in the World"—constructed for the stage. Debra Goldblatt and her team at Rock-it Promotions created the guest list and handled all of the press for the event. MORE >>
