Dragon Ball Ushers in Chinese New Year With Lion Dancers, Gods of Fortune

For the 20th anniversary of the Dragon Ball—presented by the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Saturday—organizers attempted to infuse the gala with a number of new elements and chose the tagline "Expect the Unexpected" to advertise this year's event. But the nature of the venue and the nature of the event brought limitations, said Henry Chiu, the foundation's director of development and communications.

"We follow a formula," Chiu said of the program for the evening. "There are certain elements you can't get away from. It is a celebration of the Chinese New Year...we can't get away from the Chinese elements." In an effort to switch things up this year, organizers—who worked with a team of 300 volunteers—opted to have several traditional Chinese gods of fortune mingling with the crowd of 1,200 guests. "People love to touch them...they hope their luck will rub off," Chiu said, noting in past years there was only one costumed god of fortune who mingled with V.I.P. guests. MORE >>

Organizers of the 2009 Dragon Ball unveiled the details for next year’s event and welcomed Peekaboo, a 350-pound Hereford calf, to a press conference at the Tridel Store on Carlton Street last Tuesday—highlighting the fact that the upcoming gala takes place two days prior to the arrival of the Year of the Ox.

The ball, which benefits the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, marks its 20th year at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on January 24. Tridel Corporation is the presenting sponsor of the 2009 event, which attracts more than 1,600 guests annually and is aiming to raise $1 million.

The organizing committee has already started selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a Lexus IS 250 Sports Sedan, donated by Don Valley North Lexus and Lexus of Richmond Hill, or a trip to Peru, donated by Tour East Holidays and Air Canada.   —Susan O'Neill

With new galas and benefits being hosted in the city each year, securing sponsors and selling raffle tickets is a challenge in Toronto, even for established events like the Dragon Ball. “Fund-raising is very competitive. It’s a tough business, and getting sponsors is always a key challenge,” reports Henry Chiu, director of development and communications at the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation.

However, despite that challenge, Chiu and his team surpassed their goal and secured 25 sponsors for the 19th annual charity gala, held Saturday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. "A lot of our sponsors have been with us for a long time, so they see the value in being associated with an organization like ours," Chiu said. Ellen's Food Group Inc., Rogers, Lexus, BMO Financial Group, and HSBC were just some of the sponsors involved with the event this year. "We have a series of PR events and advertising throughout the Dragon Ball time period," Chiu said, explaining that sponsors receive a lot of media exposure from the time the event is announced in November until the ball is held in February.
