For the third annual Innovators' Ball—sponsored by LG Electronics Canada for the first time and dubbed “Femme Fatale: An Evening of Intrigue”—the Ontario Science Centre drew inspiration from a new exhibit about the art of espionage to create a dinner and party that attracted a crowd of more than 1,200 people Thursday. “There’s an exhibit that opened April 9 called 'The Science of Spying.' Every year the Innovators’ Ball takes its theme from an exhibition,” said Matt Wiesenfeld, director of annual giving and a member of the event planning team.
“For the cocktail reception, we’re trying to take people back to the early days of spying,” Wiesenfeld said. “We’re creating a 20's- and 30's-era piano lounge with a singer and champagne.” Event management company Solutions With Impact created an all-white lounge with touches of green and purple—a nod to sponsor Telus—where models dressed as cigarette girls took photos of guests with LG Dare phones. “We’re working with some new sponsors this year so we’re letting them have fun with the event,” Wiesenfeld said.

After throwing a three-day consumer show—which kicked off with the Toronto Fashion Incubator's New Labels Fashion Show and Gala—at the Direct Energy Centre last spring, Transcontinental Media decided to scale things back for the second annual Elle Canada Show, held Saturday at the Carlu. The magazine created a one-day program filled with seminars, runway shows, and shopping (at 52 exhibitor booths in the Carlu's foyer) that drew 1,000 registrants. "I think that our formula now is the way to go," said Susan Solomon, manager of consumer shows for Transcontinental Media. "It's a real girls' day out."
Val Garland, artistic advisor for Yves Saint Laurent makeup, conducted a session on summer trends, and Jacquie Hutchinson, a product trainer with Revlon, talked about professional skincare. Browns shoes held a presentation on new looks for the season, and attendees received advice on how to find the best undergarments and swimsuits at a series of Perfect Fit clinics presented by Avec Plaisir Lingerie and Melmira Swimwear.

Baycrest Fund-Raiser Goes for Casual, South Beach Vibe

When the Baycrest Women's Auxiliary began planning this year's fund-raiser, the group wanted to shake things up by creating a hip, new event to benefit the health-care centre. So in an effort to break away from the gala dinners the organization has held in the past, the auxiliary chose to host a lively event at a nightclub featuring a fashion show, a jazz singer, and a DJ. "Fund-raising events are forgoing the kind of things they used to be doing," committee co-chair Janice O'Bright said. "The Women's Auxiliary wanted to get back on the map with an event like this."
For last night's event, O'Bright and the committee worked with Designing Trendz to create Lounge W.A., a South Beach-inspired jazz club at Six Degrees near Yonge and Eglinton. "We've called it a 'jeans and jewels' evening," O'Bright said, adding that organizers wanted the vibe to be casual but cool. "Also, we decided to do it in February, when we're not competing with other [charity galas],” she said. Designing Trendz transformed the usually dark venue by draping white fabric at the entranceway and filling the space with sleek white furniture, votive candles, and crystal candelabras filled with white tulips.
