| 1. L’Oréal Fashion Week
This semiannual event generates a weeklong buzz among designers, editors, retailers, and industry insiders who converge on the city from across the country. Last fall’s event, which featured 30 collections, saw the shows move from Exhibition Place to a tent at Nathan Phillips Square. This year’s shows, produced by the Fashion Design Council of Canada, ran March 17 to 22; the “Wear in the World” theme featured international designers. This year's spring 2009 collections will present October 14-19.
2. Fashion Cares
The annual fashion spectacular has raised nearly $10 million for the AIDS Committee of Toronto since 1986. American Chip Quigley produced the 2007 fund-raiser, which featured provocative lingerie, cheeky corsets, and a performance by burlesque queen Dita Von Teese. Last year the event moved from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to the Distillery District. This year the event will return to the Metro Toronto venue for the November 1, 2008 benefit.
3. New Labels Gala
The Toronto Fashion Incubator crowns an up-and-coming designer as the winner of the New Labels design competition each year at a charity gala attended by more than 800 fashion insiders. The event showcases new Canadian talent and awards prizes worth more than $25,000. The 2008 gala kicked off the three-day Elle show, held April 24 to 27 at the Direct Energy Centre.
4. Mode Accessories Show
More than 600 lines of fashion accessories were showcased at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel from January 27 to 29 and will be again from August 10 to 12. Buyers can browse displays including everything from hats and scarves to watches, hosiery, umbrellas, and shoes. Two Plus One Group Inc. produces the show.
5. Fashion North
This three-day event provides buyers with an opportunity to view new collections from internationally renowned designers, manufacturers, importers, and distributors. The spring show took place February 3 to 5 at the International Centre; the fall show will also be there, August 17 to 19.
6. Buy Design
The Distillery District hosted the fifth annual charity gala on April 26. The 2008 affair had a ’70s theme, with guests encouraged to don Halston lamé and polyester pantsuits as organizers pay homage to Studio 54. The event raised $100,000 for the Windfall Clothing Service charity.
