1. Luminato
Last year was a noteworthy inaugural for the multidisciplinary arts festival, which drew more than a million people to 100 events, many of them free. The 2008 festival, taking place June 6 to 15, features several multicultural acts, including a South Asian version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Helming the festival is Luminato C.E.O. Janice Price.

2. Scotiabank Nuit Blanche
Modelled after the all-night cultural festival in Paris, Nuit Blanche attracted 800,000 people in its second year. The 2007 festival was highly publicized, thanks to a new heavyweight sponsor (Scotiabank), and featured the work of 500 artists, including videos, installations, and building adornments. The third annual celebration of contemporary art takes place from sunset on October 4 to sunrise on October 5.

3. Interior Design Show
Created by Steven and Shauna Levy, the Interior Design Show has grown into a huge residential design event for both the industry and the public. (More than 50,000 people attended the 2007 show.) The 10th anniversary show, which ran from February 21 to 24 at the Direct Energy Centre, featured an exhibit with 10 installations from 10 innovative Canadian designers, as well as an opening party called Decadence.

4. Toronto International Art Fair
The 2007 fair saw a surge in size, attendance, and programming, with more than 5,000 works of art on display and 18,000 attendees. Open Spaces showcased nine project installations in a 15,000-square-foot space. The 2008 fair will include an opening-night preview, a benefit for the Art Gallery of Ontario, on October 2 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The fair runs from October 2 to 6.

5. Doors Open Toronto
Last year’s green theme drew record-breaking numbers (220,000 visits logged) to this free citywide celebration of architecture. Presented by The Toronto Star, 150 Toronto buildings—from heritage landmarks to factories to lecture halls—open their doors to the public, some with guided tours and activities. The theme for 2008 is “Sacred Spaces and Sacred Circles,” taking place May 24 and 25.
