History Lesson
The Canada Czech Republic Chamber of Commerce adopted a new name—inspired by an historical region in central Europe—for the Bohemian Ball, its second annual fund-raiser for the SickKids Foundation.
The history of the Czech Republic inspired the theme and name for a fund-raiser in support of the SickKids Foundation hosted by the Canada Czech Republic Chamber of Commerce at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel Friday. The organization held its inaugural benefit—an event called the Great Ball of Eights, which commemorated dates ending with the number eight—for the hospital in 2008.

"Eight is a significant number in the history of the Czech and Slovak nations because so many crucial events happened in years ending with eight—good ones and bad ones. We wanted to continue the tradition, so this is our second effort," said event organizer Erica Viezner. The name of this year's event, the Bohemian Ball, refers to the Kingdom of Bohemia, an historical region in the Czech Republic.

"SickKids always needs money, and a number of us are very committed to this," Viezner said. "Last year we donated over $9,000 to purchase three new IV Smart Pumps for diabetes patients." The event attracted a slightly smaller crowd this year, a total of 110 guests, so organizers moved from the hotel's Concert  Hall (the site of the 2008 benefit) to the Imperial Room. "Considering today's economic situation we were worried we would have half the room empty, but it has come together," Viezner said.

Organizers used minimal decor to dress the Imperial Room, which features a sunken dance floor and a stage. "Because the room is so amazing and rich-looking, we chose white linens and orange, yellow, and blue flowers," Viezner said.

Jaymz Bee of Jazz FM91 hosted the evening and entertainment included performances by the Kevin Clark Band, Sophia Perlman, Stephanie Welton, and Beverley Mahood. Event sponsors included Freedom 55 Financial, United Cleaning Services Ltd., Pilsner Urquell, Opticom Marketing, Prenco, Ferrero, Konzelmann Estate Winery, and Velan.
