Roosevelt Room: A Supper Club With Art Deco Style
The main bar Photo: Igor Yu Photography
Inspired by the Art Deco movement, the Roosevelt Room is a new supper club in the entertainment district directly behind the Toronto International Film Festival Tower. Jeff O'Brien of One Development Corp. developed the concept for the venue and called on the Design Agency to handle the decor—modeled on Hollywood's legendary Roosevelt Hotel, which hosted the first Academy Awards.
"We wanted to bring back the carefree excitement and exuberance of the Roaring Twenties," O'Brien said. "We went to the Design Agency and asked them to incorporate the 1920s feel into a modern environment. We're trying to marry the old Art Deco lines with more contemporary materials."

A $46-million renovation has transformed the historic Automotive Building, which opened to the public on the grounds of Exhibition Place in 1929, into the Allstream Centre —dubbed the greenest and most energy efficient conference facility in Canada. Just inside the Princes' Gates, the 160,000-square-foot venue officially opened Thursday.
The renovation, completed over the past 19 months under the direction of the architectural firm NORR Limited, included the restoration of the exterior of the building, constructed in the Art Deco style. Many historical elements have been retained throughout, including the tulip-shaped lighting, iron railings, and terrazzo floors in the north and south lobbies.

After a three-week closure, Rosewater Supper Club reopened September 10, in time to host an opening night cocktail reception for the Toronto International Film Festival. The venue, operated by the Liberty Entertainment Group, has a new menu and a more contemporary look, courtesy of aredesign by creative director Nadia Di Donato.
Dark oak tables fill the dining room, and the bar is now faced in blue glass. A front room that formerly housed a piano bar now offers bistro-style seating. Downstairs, a private room, formerly decorated in dark tones, has been washed in white. "It's a Philippe Starck influence," Di Donato said of the space, which has a 22-foot table surrounded by white Chippendale chairs. The Supper Club, a second private room, is being renovated in the next phase of the redesign.

Russian Samovars, Soviet-Era Propaganda Posters Fill New Cabbagetown Lounge
Samovar , a new vodka, absinthe, and champagne lounge in Cabbagetown, is the latest Russian-themed venture from Rumen Dimitroff— the man behind the original Pravda Vodka Bar and Rasputin on Queen Street East. The lounge, named after the traditional Russian teapot, is on the second floor of the historic Winchester Hotel.
The space, formerly the Laurentian Room, has hardwood floors, burgundy banquettes, and a long mahogany bar that dates to 1935. Paintings of samovars hang on the walls and a copy of War and Peace sits on the counter at the coat check. The lounge is said to be haunted and a favourite spot of Al Capone. "I get a kick out of it," Dimitroff said. "At the end of every shift we leave [the ghosts] something to drink."

Ame , a new Japanese restaurant from INK C.E.O. Charles Khabouth and Guy and Michael Rubino of Rubino Restaurants, opens Tuesday in the Mercer Street space formerly known as Rain. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant, designed by the award-winning firm Munge Leung, includes a private dining room for groups of up to 30, a main dining area, and a Japanese lounge and sake bar.
The space is filled with heritage wood (the design firm used walnut from an Amish community near Philadelphia to fashion the tables and bar), natural stone, traditional figures, and water elements. Kimono sashes are affixed to the chairs in the sake bar and lounge, which holds 50, and mirrors throughout the venue are etched with Japanese poetry. A series of dividing screens can be moved to reconfigure the space in the main dining room, which holds about 100.

Vintage Sewing Machines, Church Pews Fill Swirl Wine Bar

Swirl Wine Bar , in a converted one-bedroom apartment on Queen Street East in Leslieville, is an intimate second-storey space with two rooms that can hold up to 30 for private events. “It's just so cozy and welcoming,” said owner Janean Currie, who called on Elan Marks and April Foss of the design firm Fame to handle the decor.
“They did all the artwork and selected the furniture and distressed it,” Currie said of the space, which has hardwood floors, a copper bar, and white chandeliers. “We were looking for a French country, vineyard feel but not exactly that, more modern and comfortable.” Marks and Foss scoured antique shops and Craigslist to find the vintage Singer sewing machines that serve as tables and the church pews that line the walls in the front room. The pair chose a harvest table that seats 10 for the rear room and built a wine rack from the old banquettes used in the café that previously occupied the space.

Black and Gold Decor Fills Zin Restaurant in Yorkville
The upstairs lounge at Zin Photo: BizBash
The Yorkville space formerly occupied by the Italian restaurant Boba is now home to an Asian restaurant called Zin . The two-story venue on Avenue Road is owned by Rockie Yu of La Chine in Richmond Hill. "It's funny how we found this location. Two of our regular customers at La Chine live around here and every week they would come to the restaurant in Richmond Hill and ask us when we were going to open downtown. One day they walked in and told us this building was up for lease," Yu said.
Yu spent six weeks renovating the space before opening the restaurant in mid-July. "We changed almost everything. The only things we kept are the chandeliers," he said. Black and gold decor fills the main floor, which has a small semiprivate dining area that holds eight at the rear of the room. An upstairs lounge is equipped with a flat-screen television, a fireplace, and a separate bar.
