Mount Sinai's Eyes Wide Open benefit (formerly known as the Spring Ball) has, in the past, had a location-based theme and presentation, such as "Live From South Beach" and "A Night in Manhattan." With a new event chair (Sebastien Centner of Eatertainment Special Events & Catering) and a new venue (the nightclub This Is London), this year's benefit, which took place yesterday, adopted the more vague theme of "Secrets Revealed," with surprises like a 400-pound Bengal tiger at the club's entrance.

Jodi Spitzer, the director of events for the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, worked with Centner to take out the more predictable parts of the fund-raiser. "This year was about having an element of surprise, which is part of the reason we kept the venue a secret up until a couple of weeks ago," Spitzer said. (The event has previously been held at the Windsor Arms Hotel and the Four Seasons.) "Having the event at This Is London helped create the theme and the intrigue." READ MORE

Last year was a noteworthy inaugural for the multidisciplinary arts festival, which drew more than a million people to 100 events, many of them free. The 2008 festival, taking place June 6 to 15, features several multicultural acts, including a South Asian version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Helming the festival is Luminato C.E.O. Janice Price. 1. Bloor Street Entertains
With 23 exclusive boutiques in the Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood hosting gourmet dinners, this annual fund-raiser for Canfar is the most prestigious benefit in the city. The 2007 event, which attracted 848 people, was marred by a bomb threat outside the Royal Ontario Museum, which led to the last-minute cancellation of the venue’s after-party. (Canfar staged an online auction in early December in an effort to raise additional funds.) The 2008 event will be held at the ROM on November 26. READ MORE

It’s the world’s largest film festival open to the public—attendance exceeds 340,000—and it’s the talk of the town during its 10-day run. In 2007, the festival featured 349 films from 55 countries, along with a series of celebrity-studded galas at Roy Thomson Hall. New artistic director Noah Cowan will take the helm at the 2008 festival from September 4 to 13. READ MORE

1. L’Oréal Fashion Week
This semiannual event generates a weeklong buzz among designers, editors, retailers, and industry insiders who converge on the city from across the country. Last fall’s event, which featured 30 collections, saw the shows move from Exhibition Place to a tent at Nathan Phillips Square. This year’s shows, produced by the Fashion Design Council of Canada, ran March 17 to 22; the “Wear in the World” theme featured international designers. 1. Caribana
The music of the steel-drum bands will ring out again this summer as Caribana celebrates its 41st anniversary in late July. The two-week cultural festival—featuring concerts, Caribbean cuisine, and the massive Caribana parade along Lakeshore Boulevard—attracts one million tourists and spectators to the Greater Toronto Area each year and pumps an estimated $300 million into the local economy. Considered one of the most prestigious marketing award events in Canada, the C.M.A. has been honouring the best marketing talent in the country for more than 35 years. Bianca Barbucci and Stephen Brown were presented with honourary life memberships at the 2007 gala, held at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel. 1. Scotiabank Giller Prize Annual Gala
Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch in honour of his late wife, Doris Giller, the Scotiabank Giller Prize is the country’s most prestigious annual fiction award. Celebrity presenters Gordon Pinsent and John Ralston Saul participated in the 2007 event, which attracted 450 members of the publishing, media, and arts communities. The 2008 gala is set for November 4 at the Four Seasons Hotel. The Giller Light Bash, a fund-raiser for Frontier College, is held the same evening. READ MORE
