AARP Mag Moves Awards to Washington, Keeps Decor Low-Key

AARP the Magazine hosted its annual Inspire Awards at the National Museum of Women in the Arts on Monday night. In conjunction with its yearlong 50th anniversary festivities in Washington, the dinner moved from New York to D.C. for the first time.

The intimate event for 250 honored 10 AARP-aged activists, including Glenn Close, Quincy Jones, and Alma Powell, Colin Powell's wife. The acceptance speeches covered everything from raising awareness about mental illness to fighting global poverty. With that in mind, the decor was minimal. “What we tried to do is complement the museum itself as much as possible. It’s got a very distinct color theme,” said Kristan Mathews, an AARP events consultant. “[We wanted] to let the honorees stand out. It’s really all about them.” MORE >>

Despite Heat, AARP Convention Kicks Off at the Lincoln Memorial

Yesterday the temperature climbed into the 90s as some 10,000 people came out for AARP's 50th anniversary celebration on the National Mall, part of the group's three-day Life @50+ National Event & Expo at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The centerpiece of the event was a red stage—matching the T-shirts seen in the crowd—set about 150 feet in front of the Lincoln Memorial at the foot of the reflecting pool.

According to AARP events vice president CB Wismar, the gathering had several purposes. “First, is the 50th birthday of AARP, which caps off a year’s worth of activity on our part. It’s about pulling all our staff and members together on the Mall,” he says. “Our theme is also focused on champions that have made their mark as individuals.” MORE >>

Destination DC: 2007 Was Strong for Washington; Conferences Helping in 2008
Destination DC announced last week that Washington saw an increase in visitor spending for 2007, with 16.2 million travelers bringing $5.54 million to the area—up from 15.1 million visitors who spent $5.24 million the previous year. Lodging spending went up 5 percent to $2.0 million, while the average daily hotel rate increased 7 percent to $204. The number of international visitors rose by 13 percent to 1.2 million people, who represented 27 percent of all spending for the year.

Visitation figures are not expected to rise in 2008, due to the difficult economy, but two months so far have seen record hotel occupancy for the city—89 percent in April and 85 percent in July. The bumps are partially due to recent citywide conferences at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, such as Alpha Kappa Alpha’s centennial celebration and the National Education Association annual meeting, which have seen more than 520,000 rooms booked so far for 2008—a 22 percent increase over 2007. Thursday kicks off with an opening show from Regis Philbin, an AARP anniversary event at the Lincoln Memorial, and a concert with Natalie Cole and Chaka Khan. Maya Angelou and Quincy Jones will be closing the conference on Saturday. Kiss singer Gene Simmons will speak in the afternoon before a Paul Simon performance at the convention center.   —Danielle O'Steen

Washingtonians have always loved partying for a cause; somehow, that third glass of champagne or the second trip to the dessert bar seems excusable if it’s all about charity. The V.I.P. reception before the screening of the new Morgan Freeman-Jack Nicholson movie The Bucket List on Tuesday gave 150 attendees a good reason to celebrate: The event benefited Freeman’s charitable organization, Plan!t Now (formerly the Grenada Relief Fund), which is devoted to helping disaster-prone areas in the Gulf Coast and throughout North America.

Held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, the event drew a young, international crowd, and even a few V.I.P.s on the global scene, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, and Freeman’s home-state congressman, Representative Bennie Thompson. Plan!t Now partnered with AARP, Oxfam America, and Warner Brothers Pictures to sponsor the screening. MORE >>
