Joel Hock Takes Celebrity Car Rally to L.A., Miami to Raise Funds for Kids With Cancer
Solutions With Impact's Joel Hock

Last fall, Joel Hock, founder and president of the Toronto-based event management firm Solutions With Impact, produced an event to benefit the Hospital for Sick Children. Called the Car Rally for Kids With Cancer, the two-day event, held during the Toronto International Film Festival, paired luxury-car owners with celebrity navigators for an interactive scavenger hunt across the city. Drivers had to raise $25,000 to enter the contest, and the event raised more than $1.2 million for the hospital.

This weekend, Hock hopes to duplicate that success in Los Angeles, where Eva Longoria Parker is the event chair for the city's first Car Rally. The benefit—in support of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Padres Contra El Cáncer, a nonprofit organization that supports families of Latino children with cancer—kicks off with a launch party at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Friday and concludes with a gala dinner Saturday night at a $30 million private home in Beverly Hills (owned by Bill Phillips of Transformation.com). With another Car Rally slated to run in Toronto this September, and Las Vegas and Miami incarnations in the works, we spoke with Hock about expanding the event.

Why did you decide to take the event national this year?
I think the event itself works from a fund-raising standpoint. People, once they understand it, want to get involved. And kids with cancer is a cause that hits home whether it’s in L.A., Vegas, Miami, or Toronto. In my opinion, the cure is just around the corner and all it takes is money. This event is driven by the participants. MORE >>

With Globes Ceremony Off, Parties Canceled
Since the official announcement of the Golden Globes ceremony cancellation came yesterday, we've confirmed that the slate of big parties at the Beverly Hilton has been decimated as well. In Style's party with Warner Brothers, overseen by Cyd Wilson for Time Inc., is off, along with HBO's party, helmed by New York-based Eileen Rivard. NBC Universal's party has also been scrapped.

"The news of [the cancellation was] very disappointing as this was an absolutely stunning design, complete with 56 black Murano crystal chandeliers, a water curtain with video monitors built in it, and classic Cartier jewelry again," said Mark Yumkas, who heads up the NBC party's design and production team at Angel City.

Somewhat surprisingly, some of the gift suites around town will nonetheless go on. MORE >>

Planners on Hold Ahead of Today's Expected Globes Announcement
While hordes of industry folks wait on official word—expected to come today—about the fate of the Golden Globes under the writers strike, planners we spoke to earlier today who are working on the week's big related events were resigned to a wait-and-see approach.

"Everything's on hold," said Eileen Rivard, HBO's New York-based vice president of special events, who works on the network's annual party at the Beverly Hilton, when we spoke to her today. "It would be nice to know what's going on." HBO's bash is among the most anticipated of the night.

NBC Universal's party was in a holding pattern as well. "The tent was supposed to be installed today, and then we got a call over the weekend and it was pushed back until tomorrow," said Mark Yumkas of Angel City, the group that designs and produces the party. The load-in was on indefinite hold.

Only organizers behind gift suites—like In Style's and a suite sponsored by CVS and Access Hollywood—have told us decisively that they have no plans to pull the plug. Nonetheless, the landscape of the suites around town is likely to change in some way when official announcements come down regarding the state of the Globes. "If the telecast goes on, none of the talent go on, and none want to be seen at suites," said Cara Kleinhaut, whose Caravents produces the event for In Style. "What [the planned suites] might do is reposition themselves as a chance to come by and look at jewelry and get a blowout. No press, not the usual media circus. But right now we're still on [as scheduled]."   —Alesandra Dubin
