As in years past, parties of every kind and colorfrom movie screenings to exhibit openings to hangover brunchessurrounded this year's White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Here’s a wrap-up of the weekend's attractions:

Bloomberg and Vanity Fair's After-Party
Capitol File may have hosted the weekend's biggest party, but the most exclusive honors went to Bloomberg LP and Vanity Fair, who hosted an impossible-to-get-into shindig for 250 on Saturday night. Taking over French ambassador Pierre Vimont's turn-of-the-century home in Kalorama, the party drew big names from politics and Hollywood, among them Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Glenn Close, Eva Longoria, David Axelrod, Desiree Rogers, and the ubiquitous Captains Chesley Sullenberger and Richard Phillips. The party took over the mansion's interior rooms with bars and buffets, and spilled out into the backyard, where the many trees were uplit in blue, pink, and green.

David Bradley's Private Dinner
On Friday night, Atlantic Media owner David Bradley and his wife, Katherine Brittain Bradley, hosted an indoor cocktail reception followed by an outdoor seated dinner at their Embassy Row home. Sponsored by Toyota and Robert Mondavi Winery, the annual event was twice as large as last year, thus requiring for the first time a 40- by 40-foot HDO Productions tent, which Frost Lighting technicians draped with white rope lights. Hosts Gear Up for White House Correspondents Weekend Parties
With the approval rating high for the new administration, it appears that a tsunami of V.I.P.s will be in town for this weekend’s line up of brunches, cocktail receptions, dinners, and after-parties surrounding Saturday night’s White House Correspondents Association dinner at the Hilton Washington. (The only big name not mentioned, thus far, appears to be British reality TV sensation Susan Boyle.)

The once-sleepy insider’s dinner and joke fest, traditionally attended by the President of the United States, has never been the same since that day in 1987 when Baltimore Sun reporter Michael Kelly escorted the Iran-Contra scandal’s Fawn Hall. One hot guest still in the paddock is Sir Elton John, reportedly in town this weekend attending the Land Rover America’s Polo Cup, according to the Washington Times.

Few details have emerged ahead of Friday night’s Time Inc. joint party for Time and People at the Astor Terrace of the St. Regis or the joint fete Bloomberg News and Vanity Fair are teaming up to host Saturday night for 300 guests at the residence of French Ambassador Pierre Vimont. Other media organizations, however, are sharing details.

Whether it’s a C.E.O. or hundreds of attendees coming to Washington, guests always appreciate a little local hospitality. Here are ways to thank people for coming, entertain them, or simply help them get oriented.

Elika Hemphill, director of global events for Discovery Communications, usually finds gifts for visiting colleagues at Discovery’s online store. But when she’s looking for something with local flair, she goes to the National Building Museum gift shop. “They have a fantastic assortment of green products, a wonderful library, and everything modern and funky you could want for the home and office,” she says. The shop carries D.C.-specific items such as city guidebooks, neckties with a map of the city, and cards filled with origami foldouts of the city’s monuments. MORE >>

Nordstrom Hosts Men's Runway Show

On Thursday, Nordstrom Tyson’s Corner hosted its biggest men’s fashion event of the year, erecting a 36-foot runway and a lounge setting (bedecked with black leather couches) for the in-house occasion. Open to the public, the event kicked off during store hours with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by a 35-minute runway show at 7 p.m.

Sporting the wares of eight designers, male models walked the runway, which was three feet high and outfitted in black carpet. “The set is elaborate in the sense that it's different from anything we’ve done before,” said Nordstrom event marketing coordinator Lisa Imperato, who produced the event. “This is the first menswear show to come to the capital area—we haven’t seen anything like it around here—so it’s fun and exclusive.” MORE >>

DC Magazine Advises on Design House Opening Night
"A Fashion House" showcases the work of eight interior designers.

Taking fashion trends from the runway and reinterpreting them for the home was the challenge that eight mid-Atlantic interior designers faced in creating the Washington Design Center’s latest Design House, called "A Fashion House." Meanwhile, the challenge for those planning the exhibit's opening night was to take the designers’ work and put together a party consistent with the fashion-forward themes of the eight rooms.

A little background: Each year, the Design Center partners with a local magazine when it launches a new Design House; this year, it chose DC Magazine, and the two worked with Gala Events and Windows Catering Company to create a lively, food- and music-filled atmosphere consistent with the modern feel of the venue.

“We used a lot of black and white and shiny and metallic items,” said DC Magazine marketing director Martha Pheeny, who produced the event. With the Design House rooms filled with every color under the sun, Pheeny and Gala Events designer Jamie Greenwald opted for a clean look for the cocktail party decor. Case in point: giant black-and-white velour curtains hung along the hallway leading up to the conference-room-turned-lounge that also served as an entrance to the exhibit. The furniture throughout the room was simple, too, including white couches, a tufted white leather bar, and white hydrangea and lily floral arrangements. MORE >>
