1. Fashion Fights Poverty Runway Show
This runway presentation, which raises money for a different charity each year, moved to the St. Regis Hotel in 2008 and shrank to a more exclusive 250-person event. Actress Parker Posey and Fox 5 news anchor Will Thomas hosted the show, which returns for a fifth year this fall.

2. Nordstrom’s Designer Fall Preview
In 2008, 500 guests caught Nordstrom’s latest fashions and raised $60,000 for nonprofit Knock Out Abuse Against Women at this runway show at the National Building Museum. The eighth annual show returns this month.

After two years at the Carnegie Library, Fashion Fights Poverty, a runway show and fund-raiser promoting ethical reform within the fashion industry, made the move to the St. Regis hotel on Friday for its fourth annual incarnation. "We thought it would be a different touch, more intimate and more private,” said Kadrieka Maiden, director of communications for the Style & Image Network, which produced the sold-out evening. Cutting the guest list from last year’s 500 guests to 250 also gave the night a more exclusive feel, Maiden said. (Last year's show topped the fashion and beauty category in our 2008 ranking of Washington's Top 100 Events.)

This year the event focused on a dual mission: to spotlight designers who are committed to principles of social responsibility, eco-sustainability, and community development; and to benefit NEST, a nonprofit that provides micro-loans to female artisans in developing countries. MORE >>

Parker Posey to Host Fashion Fights Poverty Benefit
Parker Posey is lending some star power to the fourth annual Fashion Fights Poverty fund-raiser on September 26, by co-hosting the event with Fox 5 News Anchor Will Thomas. The fashion show, at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, is organized by Style & Image Network and spotlights sweatshop-free, eco-friendly clothing. This year's beneficiary is the nonprofit Nest, which supports women in developing countries.

For the event, American and international designs, including menswear from D.C.-based Eric Finn Custom Clothiers and organic hemp wedding dresses from Toronto’s Adele Wechsler, will hit the runway. An after-party for the 500 expected attendees at Lotus Lounge will follow.   —Adele Chapin

In 2005, Sylvie Luanghy co-founded the Style & Image Network Agency, a public relations and event marketing firm geared toward small businesses, nonprofits, and government embassies. She and her staff put together two large-scale events and several smaller events every year, including the recent Fashion Fights Poverty event, which is one of the largest fashion fund-raisers in the Washington area.

Venue:The Carnegie Library building is old, but you can do so much with it. There’s such a wonderful historical aspect to it. The room itself is pretty plain, so you can really transform it because of the beautiful ceiling design and big columns. We have done Fashion Fights Poverty there for the past two years, and we’ve also hosted [our other big event] 'Beauty Night Out,' which is a night geared toward showcasing new products, there."

Chocolate Design: “A company that really adds a level of sexiness is Edward Marc Chocolatier. They created a fabulous chocolate-based decor scheme [for our chocolate suite at Fashion Fights Poverty]. Edward Marc is based in Pittsburgh but is branching out to the D.C. area. They were right on target in terms of design, and we got a lot of compliments.” MORE >>

A fashionable crowd of 500 descended upon the Carnegie Library for the third annual Fashion Fights Poverty runway show on Friday, coming together to check out the wares of nine designers who are morally minded when it comes to manufacturing. “It’s bigger every year,” said Fashion Fights Poverty creative director Michael Dumlao, who’s also a founder of the Style & Image Network, the public relations and event marketing firm that produces the event.  “We’ve increased the number of designers every year, from four to six to nine. We’ve extended to Miami and the Hamptons. The brand is growing beyond D.C.”

The brand is also attracting big-time sponsors. This year, Maserati, Lamborghini, Whole Foods, West Elm, and Peroni all signed on. The mission of the event, however, remains the same: to raise awareness about how fashion can promote economic development and to benefit organizations that use art and design to alleviate poverty, like Aid to Artisans, 2007’s beneficiary.
