On Monday, GE Healthcare opened its User Summit at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and on Wednesday night the convention’s marquee event took over the Renaissance Washington. With a “Taste of Washington” theme, the party flooded the hotel with 3,000 guests for an evening of networking.

"We wanted to make this night interactive," said Christine Connolly, GE commercial marketing manager of events. "We wanted guests to be interacting with each other, [just like they're] interacting with technology throughout the conference."

Connolly's team, working with CSI-Capitol Services Inc., created five vignettes in the hotel’s ballroom, each focused on a D.C. neighborhood such as Capitol Hill (where backdrops of the city’s monuments provided many a photo-op). The Adams Morgan space had pizza stations (to channel the area's famed Jumbo Slice Pizza) and Wii consoles, while the U Street Corridor section went for a lounge vibe and offered make-your-own chili stations to evoke the famed Ben's Chili Bowl. This Week's GE Healthcare Summit Includes 46-Sponsor Trade Show
The GE Healthcare User Summit kicks off today at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, bringing some 3,000 GE customers, employees, and partners to the city through Thursday. The convention, which is projecting $3.9 million in delegate spending and 13,000 hotel room nights booked, is offering educational sessions on topics ranging from the use of technology for patient communication to the practices of digital imaging. The summit is also offering hands-on demos with GE equipment as well as a sponsor pavilion, featuring wares from 46 companies such as Intel, Dell, and Panasonic.

For the summit's finale, GE is hosting a networking event—for all 3,000 attendees—on Wednesday night at the Renaissance Washington. To give guests a taste of D.C., the evening, produced by GE and Capitol Services Inc., will offer neighborhood-themed vignettes such as a full-service spa setup for Georgetown and a pagoda and lantern display for Chinatown.   —Danielle O'Steen

Big Conventions and Meetings Heading to the District This Summer
This week Destination D.C. announced the lineup of conventions hitting Washington this summer. “The summer months are often a slower period for meetings and conventions in D.C., but this year we’ve helped to level out the calendar by securing some high-profile July and August gatherings,” said the organization's president and C.E.O., Bill Hanbury, in a press release.

Starting next week, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center is home to the National Education Association's annual conference and expo for 17,000 from July 2 to 6. The convention center is also on tap to host the 100th anniversary conference of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority with more than 20,000 members from July 11 to 18, as well as the A.A.R.P. convention from September 4 to 6,  which will mark 50 years for the Washington-based organization with 25,000 attendees, presentations from Gene Simmons, Cal Ripken, and Magic Johnson, and musical performances by Chaka Khan and Natalie Cole.
