Larry King Cardiac Foundation Cancels Annual Gala, Goes Virtual
With a nod to the recession, the Larry King Cardiac Foundation canceled its annual gala, which had been scheduled for March 28 at the Ritz Carlton Washington. Last year's event, produced by Linda Roth, raised more than $1.2 million for the CNN host’s foundation.

Foundation president Larry King Jr. told us yesterday that considering the state of the economy, “It just didn’t feel like the right year. Instead, we decided, 'Let’s do something different, involve more people.' So we launched a virtual fund-raiser this week.” MORE >>

1. Knock Out Abuse and Fight Night Gala
This November fund-raiser is actually two parties: a cigar-and-boxing-fueled Fight Night, which raised $2.4 million for nonprofit Fight for Children in 2007, and the Knock Out Abuse gala, which raised $650,000 to combat domestic violence. Actor Chris Tucker and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia were among the 2,200 guests at the Washington Hilton and Towers for Fight Night, while a crowd of 750 flocked to the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C., for the gala. Everyone then merged for an after-party at the Ritz. Liz Warnecki of Fight for Children coordinates Fight Night, while the gala is produced by Andre Wells. Both parties return on November 6.

2. The Opera Ball
French ambassador Pierre Vimont’s Kalorama residence played host to the Washington National Opera’s largest annual fund-raising event on June 6. Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff attended the Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed garden party, which featured 4,000 glass votives, five chandeliers hanging from a tree, and 15 lighting displays. Patti Humphrey, special events director for the Washington National Opera, planned the 500-person party. MORE >>

Larry King is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his Larry King Cardiac Foundation tomorrow night at the organization's annual benefit. Produced again by Linda Roth, the 500-person event is taking over the Washington Ritz-Carlton, where a few new facets are being added to the evening.

For one, the live "Auction to Live" will offer bidders a chance to buy a cardiac procedure for a patient. "We thought we'd make this year about the patients," Roth said, adding that some 20 healthy patients who been helped by the foundation will be on site, volunteering to act as bid spotters. Items up for bid include a pacemaker, open-heart surgery, and a basic stent procedure. Added Linda Roth associate Alicia Sovart, "The healthy patients allow the guests to see that their dollars are going to good use." MORE >>

The entertainment was the focus this year at the Larry King Cardiac Foundation gala. Disco queen Donna Summer performed an extra-long 45-minute set at the June 9 soiree, filling the shoes of former headliners Stevie Wonder and Tim McGraw.

“We’ve done all kinds of really wacky things in the past,” said Linda Roth, an organizer of previous foundation galas, referring to having King dress in all-white Saturday Night Fever-esque attire one year. “This year we are actually not going for wacky. We decided to instead pump it up with our entertainment.” MORE >>
