Still a work in progress since its soft opening on April 1, the 343-room Liaison Capitol Hill announced this week plans to debut a new 221-seat restaurant on September 1, helmed by Chicago chef Art Smith. A two-time James Beard Award recipient, Smith is best known as Oprah Winfrey's longtime personal chef and as founder of the nonprofit Common Threads (check out the organization's recent fund-raiser here).

The space, designed by the Seattle firm Dawson Design, will be split into multiple dining areas. The lounge, complete with upholstered and faux ostrich leather sofas, will open into the hotel lobby, flanking the bar and dining room, which will be separated by chain-mail curtains. The dining area will look out onto the 76-seat open-air patio through 16-foot glass walls. Also on site: a 25-seat private room. MORE >>

Come April 1, the Hill will have a new hotel: the Liaison Capitol Hill, the first Washington site from Affinia Hotels, which has five properties in New York and Chicago. In the former Holiday Inn on the Hill space, between Union Station and the Capitol on New Jersey Avenue, the 343-room hotel is in the midst of a $12 million renovation. The proposed design, from Dawson Design of Seattle, follows a modern decor in shades of black, white, and gray accented with red, with the lobby featuring six- by six-foot paintings of famous world leaders from Mahatma Gandhi to Margaret Thatcher.
