MSNBC and Rodale co-hosted a cocktail party celebrating wildlife expert and Food Network host Jeff Corwin’s new documentary and book about the plight of endangered species. Held at the Occidental Restaurant Thursday night, the event drew in approximately 200 guests, including conservation activist Laura Turner Seydel, administration officials, and representatives from the Smithsonian, Discovery, and Planet Green.
Corwin’s documentary, Future Earth: 100 Heartbeats, will be screened in New York prior to its November 22 airdate as part of NBC Universal’s Green Week, but Corwin chose to hold the launch party for both the book, 100 Heartbeats, and the documentary in Washington, because of his friendship with Occidental assistant manager Lawrence von Weigel, and the city's central role the environmental movement.

Candy, Ice Cream, and Rachel Maddow Accent MSNBC's Radio and TV Correspondents' Dinner After-Party
|
Guests at the 65th Radio and Television Correspondents' Association Dinner on Friday shouldn’t have had any problem finding the after-party hosted by MSNBC. They simply walked across the street from the dinner at the Washington Convention Center to the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., where giant light projections of the MSNBC logo on the building’s exterior lit up the night sky.
The annual dinner, which was held at the convention center for the first time and included a speech by Barack Obama and a performance by Sweet Honey in the Rock, ended at around 10:30 p.m. As the journos and politicians on the guest list made their way across the street to the party, music pumped from speakers outside and red and blue rotating LED lights cast a glow on the society’s classical building. “We wanted to make an impact and put our imprint on the city,” explained Dana Haller, producer of strategic marketing for MSNBC, who worked with producer Philip Dufour of Dufour & Co. and lighting production company Atmosphere to design the look.

Despite Worries of Impropriety, National Hospice Foundation Offers a Diamond-Packed Auction
|
Hundreds of diamonds—both real and not—glittered at Friday night’s National Hospice Foundation Bricks and Diamonds gala at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, where 600 guests gathered for cocktails, dinner, and a silent auction of new and vintage jewelry. With Chris Matthews of MSNBC as M.C., the evening honored individuals who have raised awareness of the benefits of hospice care.
The theme for the foundation’s fifth annual gala started as a joke, a play on the name of board chair, Brickson Diamond. In light of the foundation's November move to a new headquarters in Alexandria, bricks seemed appropriate. Decor elements at the Omni Shoreham’s Regency ballroom included vases wrapped in paper printed with a brick motif and fake gems that sparkled on tabletops and dangled from floral arrangements.

On Saturday night, under unusually warm, clear skies, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School held its 35th annual auction and dinner in the school’s gym, with event proceeds benefiting the in-house financial aid programs. Kicking-off at 5:30 p.m., the evening had a safari theme, and the silent auction's 450 attendees (350 for the seated dinner), included parents and alumnae dressed in animal prints, khaki pants, and safari hats. At the entrances were two white Jeeps (on loan from school patrons) propped with stuffed animals, and mosquito netting and a bounty of tropical potted plants decorated the gym.

Hardball Anniversary Draws Pols, Media Crowd

“Hiya, Senator,” “Hello, Congressman.” Those were the greetings for the boldface guests who gathered Thursday night in Washington to celebrate the 10th anniversary of MSNBC’s Hardball. The show’s barking-head host, the larger-than-life Chris Matthews, was also toasting the release of his Random House book, Life’s a Campaign. A few hundred politicians, high-level staffers, media types, and talking heads turned up to mark the occasion.
In typical Washington fashion, it wasn’t so much the party trappings but the attendees that made the bash a hot ticket. Only-on-Pennsylvania-Avenue moments—like Senator Edward Kennedy bumping into his son, Representative Patrick Kennedy, walking into the party—underscored the power-mingling scene. Other notable guests included former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, NBC newsman Tim Russert, and Senator John Kerry.
The venue itself smacked of history—the Decatur House, with its expansive, tented courtyard, is yards away from the White House. NBC event manager Alison Katz, who coordinated the fete from New York with help from planners at Random House, said Matthews and company were looking for an outdoor setting that was “a bit different” than the usual hotel-courtyard standbys. The understated decor, which included pin lights and colored linens, was inspired by the Hardball logo. “I looked at the logo and tried to apply it to the look and feel of the party,” Katz said.
