Award-Winning Washington Mixologist Offers Custom Cocktails and Classes

Derek M. Brown is a font of bartending information. He can talk at length about how the Tom Collins got its name (from a joke, not a man), the first bartender (Jerry Thomas), or why, in his opinion, cocktails are one of America’s greatest contributions to the world, next to baseball and jazz. A certified sommelier who trained at the Beverage Alcohol Resource Program, Brown was named the 2009 Bartender of the Year by Washington City Paper for his work at the Gibson, where he still pours a few nights a week. Looking for a way to combine his love of cocktail history and his knowledge of spirits and wine, he started Better Drinking early this year, offering private classes and bartending services for events. AMC Teams Up With Big Brands, Hosts Public Screening to Make Mad Men Mainstream

FROM NEW YORK Sunday's third season premiere of Mad Men brought AMC record ratings, and though the show's status as current critical darling had to help, nearly a month of experiential promotions nationally and in New York couldn't have hurt either. Culminating in a public screening in Times Square Sunday night, AMC partnered with brands such as Banana Republic, Delta Airlines, and Hilton Hotels to pitch the niche show to the general public.

"It was really an effort to elevate the brand of Mad Men and AMC together," said AMC vice president of activation and promotion Theresa Beyer. "Beyond the smaller group of people, we wanted to break out and go beyond the Mad Men fanbase. It was big and bold for us. Between the activation with Banana Republic and the public efforts in New York, we really felt like we achieved a tsunami of promotions." MORE >>
