To celebrate the release of its 28th annual "Inc. 500" list, Inc. magazine brought 1,700 business leaders to the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, September 23 to 25, for the Inc. 500/5000 Conference and Awards Ceremony. Recently expanded to recognize the nation's 5,000 fastest growing companies—not just 500—the Mansueto Ventures-owned publication's aptly named event included a casual "crab fest" and a gala awards presentation.

The flagship event is an important branding moment for Inc., which sees the conference as not just a chance to promote its signature issue but also as an opportunity to enhance brand awareness among some of its most desirable readers. "The goal that we've been trying to achieve is to have more cohesive brand representation," said Mansueto Ventures events director Courtney Waters, who worked with Anne Frey-Mott and Elizabeth Busch of New York-based the Event Studio to plan the conference. "We worked really hard to have everything from the magazine, the [Web] site, and the conference have the same look and feel." MORE >>

After the guests have gone home and the vendors have been paid, work often continues for planners gathering feedback on the logistics and programming of their events or meetings. Here are some software programs that survey attendees and compile responses.

For Lora Di Padova-Tannehill, director of scientific meetings for the American Society of Neuroradiology in Chicago, feedback is vital. An accrediting organization that determines future funding closely monitors the five executive-committee meetings and the 2,000-person convention she plans annually. “The evaluations of our programming need to validate that our education is providing improved quality of care to patients,” she says. Tannehill uses Web-based Survey Monkey to poll attendees on event logistics like housing, registration, food service, and venue selection. “The site is easy to develop and maintain responses and statistics for future use,” she says. “I like the features and versatility. I see it being used a lot more in the industry.” The site allows users to create surveys for free, with limits on the number of questions and responses allotted. A paid subscription with more options costs $19.95 per month. MORE >>

Inc. magazine’s 27th annual "Inc. 500/Inc. 5000" conference took place last Thursday and Friday at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center at the newly constructed National Harbor complex. The two-day expo culminated in an awards ceremony Saturday evening, honoring the top 5,000 entrepreneurs in the country with a champagne reception, dinner, and gala in Gaylord’s Potomac ballroom.

“Small businesses drive the economy,” said Stephanie Rubin, marketing director of Inc. magazine’s publishing company, Mansueto Ventures. “We thought, 'What better way to celebrate than in the nation's capitol?'" In fact, Inc. magazine signed a deal with Gaylord to host the event there for the next four years. The conference also celebrated the fact that Washington was named the No. 1 Inc. 500 city, with more Inc. 500 companies than any other city in the country. MORE >>
