1. Knock Out Abuse and Fight Night Gala
This two-in-one party encompasses the Knock Out Abuse Against Women gala—a lavish women-only fete for 650 at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.—while 2,000 men simultaneously enjoy Fight Night, an evening of boxing matches at the Hilton Washington. The two parties join for a gender-neutral after-party. The dual fund-raisers for anti-domestic-violence causes and the health care nonprofit Fight for Children return November 5.
2. The Opera Ball
The Washington National Opera’s elite event brings some 500 guests—including Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Congressman Dennis Kucinich in 2008—to a different ambassador’s residence each year. The German ambassador hosted this year’s June 5 ball.
3. YouthAIDS Benefit Gala
Ashley Judd, Sharon Osbourne, and Anna Kournikova were among the 550 guests at Population Services International’s 2008 benefit at the Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner. The rock 'n' roll theme party, which raised $1.2 million for the organization, returns this November.

Impressionist Works Inspire Decor for Phillips Collection Benefit
|
On Friday night, the Phillips Collection transformed for its annual gala, turning each of its major galleries into decked-out dining rooms. Washington notables such as Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Samuel Alito and ambassadors from Spain, Japan, and Switzerland, among others, were in attendance, joining the 400-some guests for an evening of sustainable dining and late-night dancing, while raising dollars for the museum’s youth programs.
“Our thought was to make the educational programs the centerpiece of the event,” said Phillips director of special events Keith Costas. So escort cards included information on how the gala’s $520,000 proceeds will bring more than 4,000 students to the Phillips. Also, in place of standard giveaways, each setting included a handmade thank-you card from a child who had been affected by the Phillips (in addition to a complimentary year membership). The idea, for Costas, was to continually remind the guests of the evening’s purpose.

Phillips Collection Takes Gala Decor Colors From Paintings
|
The Phillips Collection’s event planner, Allison Signorelli, faced a double dilemma in coordinating the museum’s annual spring gala, which took place on Friday. She needed to wrest the spotlight from the gallery’s collection and refocus guests’ attention on her decor, while finding a look that bridged the museum’s dramatically different wings—one a warren of modernist white spaces and the other historic in dark wood and ornamental plaster.
Similar in concept to the Corcoran Ball, the Phillips gala opened its 11 galleries to some 350 guests, giving them a chance to dine amongst the masterpieces. Last year, the event took a cue from an exhibition on film, opting for black-and-white motifs. For this year's gala, dubbed the Boaters’ Ball, Renoir’s famed canvas "Luncheon of the Boating Party" (the centerpiece of the Phillips collection) acted as the muse for the menu and gifts.

Taking a cue from the current “Moving Pictures: American Art and Early Film” exhibit, the Phillips Collection hosted a black-and-white gala on May 4, with decor and flowers from New York-based designer David Tutera. “The look is very crisp, clean, modern meets old world, because you’re in a modern art museum, and focusing on a vintage-themed exhibit,” Tutera said.
