1. State of the Union Address
The president’s big annual speech is the only time the entire federal government gathers in one place. Although a new president’s first-year address to Congress bears all the trappings of this gathering, it’s technically not considered one, so President Obama’s first official State of the Union takes place January 2010.

2. White House Correspondent’s Association Dinner
Comedian Wanda Sykes hosted this May 9 event, traditionally attended by the president along with some 2,000 politicians, journalists, and celebrities. Dinner at the Washington Hilton is preceded by a maze of pre-parties hosted by media outlets. For the first time, Bloomberg and Vanity Fair  co-hosted an after-party this year.

3. Gridiron Club Black-Tie Dinner
President Obama bucked tradition in March, skipping this 125-year-old event in favor of a family vacation. The 600-plus guests at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel consoled themselves with barbs from Vice President Joe Biden and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. MORE >>

30 Trolleys and 1,400 American Flags: More Details From Obama's Rally
Before Tuesday's election night rally, the Obama campaign asked associated vendors not to speak to the press about the evening's logistics. "But now that it's over, we can talk all day," said John Curran, vice president of charter sales and marketing for Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Company. And while the Obama camp prepares for its transition to the White House, rally vendors have been sharing more details.

Curran said that Chicago Trolley's task on Tuesday night was to work in conjunction with the Secret Service to safely transport V.I.P. guests—Brad Pitt, Spike Lee, and Rahm Emanuel (now set to be the president-elect's chief of staff) among them—to Grant Park from the nearby Fairmont Chicago and Hyatt Regency hotels. Spina Bifida Association Announces Roast Roster
The Spina Bifida Association of America announced the roster for its November 14 celebrity roast of Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert. The Examiner reported yesterday that political heavies like White House press secretary Dana Perino, House Democratic Caucus chairman Rahm Emanuel, Senator Orrin Hatch, and D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton all made the list of roasters taking rhetorical jabs at the Colbert Report host.

According to Spina Bifida Association C.E.O. Cindy Brownstein, these roasters were chosen because of their association with Colbert—particularly his history of making jokes at their expense on his own show. She confesses that it wasn’t very hard to find participants looking to turn the tables on the political satirist.

The 20th annual Spina Bifida roast, which will be held at the Hilton Washington will also feature an auction for a travel package for two to the 2009 Masters Tournament and a raffle for a 2008 Lexus RX 400h to benefit the association. Tickets are $500 per person, but the association is offering a discounted price of $350 to first-time attendees.   —Lourdes Branch
