Guests at the 65th Radio and Television Correspondents' Association Dinner on Friday shouldn’t have had any problem finding the after-party hosted by MSNBC. They simply walked across the street from the dinner at the Washington Convention Center to the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., where giant light projections of the MSNBC logo on the building’s exterior lit up the night sky.

The annual dinner, which was held at the convention center for the first time and included a speech by Barack Obama and a performance by Sweet Honey in the Rock, ended at around 10:30 p.m. As the journos and politicians on the guest list made their way across the street to the party, music pumped from speakers outside and red and blue rotating LED lights cast a glow on the society’s classical building. “We wanted to make an impact and  put our imprint on the city,” explained Dana Haller, producer of strategic marketing for MSNBC, who worked with producer Philip Dufour of Dufour & Co. and lighting production company Atmosphere to design the look.

Starbucks Steals Some Election Day Coverage With Last-Minute Promotion
Starbucks was able to leverage serious traction from its latest guerrilla-marketing stunt. Advertising Age reports today that the coffee chain’s last-minute Election Day promotion, offering free coffee to customers who voted or just asked for it, brought the brand some of its best publicity in quite a while.

The company declined to comment on how many cups were given away or how much was spent, but industry experts and former Starbucks insiders place the cost of the minimal ad campaign and the product giveaway at under $1 million—a small price to pay for a chunk of coverage on a day when at least 71 million Americans tune into the news. The initiative prompted the chain's positive buzz rating to more than double from 25 percent to 51 percent, according to Brand Index. MORE >>

The National Building Museum served as the backdrop for Tuesday evening's "Lone Sailor" dinner, a black-tie fund-raiser and awards ceremony for the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation. Roughly 850 guests, including high-ranking military officials, Today show co-host Ann Curry, Lieutenant Andy Baldwin (of The Bachelor fame), and John McCain's mother Roberta gathered in the museum's main atrium. The venue and crowd marked a large increase from the event's auspicious 1987 beginnings, when it garnered 350 guests in the Ritz-Carlton ballroom.

Sponsored by consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, the pre-dinner cocktail reception was purposefully low on decora central bar sat alongside gold-draped tables with votive centerpiecesin order to keep the focus on what U.S. Navy Memorial manager of special events David Jonas called the "awe-inspiring" venue. The evening's purpose (and host) was ever-present, with large-scale images of the U.S. Navy Memorial and a selection of service flags adorning the room, and sailors standing watch at each entryway, greeting guests and assisting women and men up and down stairs as necessary. "We wanted to go with a sea-service theme," Jonas said. MORE >>
