1. Knock Out Abuse and Fight Night Gala
This two-in-one party encompasses the Knock Out Abuse Against Women gala—a lavish women-only fete for 650 at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.—while 2,000 men simultaneously enjoy Fight Night, an evening of boxing matches at the Hilton Washington. The two parties join for a gender-neutral after-party. The dual fund-raisers for anti-domestic-violence causes and the health care nonprofit Fight for Children return November 5.

2. The Opera Ball
The Washington National Opera’s elite event brings some 500 guests—including Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Congressman Dennis Kucinich in 2008—to a different ambassador’s residence each year. The German ambassador hosted this year’s June 5 ball.

3. YouthAIDS Benefit Gala
Ashley Judd, Sharon Osbourne, and Anna Kournikova were among the 550 guests at Population Services International’s 2008 benefit at the Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner. The rock 'n' roll theme party, which raised $1.2 million for the organization, returns this November. MORE >>

1. Fashion Fights Poverty Runway Show
This runway presentation, which raises money for a different charity each year, moved to the St. Regis Hotel in 2008 and shrank to a more exclusive 250-person event. Actress Parker Posey and Fox 5 news anchor Will Thomas hosted the show, which returns for a fifth year this fall.

2. Nordstrom’s Designer Fall Preview
In 2008, 500 guests caught Nordstrom’s latest fashions and raised $60,000 for nonprofit Knock Out Abuse Against Women at this runway show at the National Building Museum. The eighth annual show returns this month.

Adding 300 dogs to a Ritz-Carlton ballroom filled with chocolates and pastries seems like a recipe for disaster. Yet yesterday’s seventh annual Sugar & Champagne Affair benefiting the Washington Humane Society was surprisingly calm, with scarcely a bark or growl to be heard. The event brought together chefs from more than 20 of the area’s top restaurants, offering owners and their dogs a chance to sample a variety of champagnes, chocolates and desserts. The Washington Humane Society’s annual Bark Ball, now in its 21st year, is the only black-tie event in D.C. where pets are not only allowed, but welcome. In fact, the event saw 400 dogs and 600 guests at the Renaissance Washington on Saturday night.

Humane Society director of marketing and communications Tara de Nicolas designed the event with a political "Decision 2008" theme in mind, and included a pet primary of sorts where dogs voted by choosing between treats in the shape of a Democratic donkey or a Republican elephant (provided by Capitol Dog Bakery). After the votes were tallied, event chair and NBC correspondent David Gregory announced the elephant treats to be the favorite. MORE >>

Washingtonians shared the spotlight with their dogs at the Washington Humane Society’s second annual Fashion for Paws runway show on Saturday at the Embassy of Italy. More than 60 familiar locals—Philippe Cousteau, Capitol File’s Jayne Sandman, and a leather-jacket-clad Fox 5 News anchor Will Thomas were among the models—and their pooches vamped down the raised runway in matching looks from Saks Fifth Avenue (on the people) and Barkley Square Bakery and Boutique (on the dogs).

The event drew 1,100 guests, many of whom attempted the evening’s "Italian chic" dress code. Tara de Nicolas, director of marketing and communications for the Humane Society and the evening’s advisory chair, selected the Italian embassy’s soaring atrium in anticipation of the show’s popularity. “It’s big enough to hold everyone and it is beautiful,” she said. The Washington Humane Society held its sixth annual Sugar & Champagne Affair on Thursday night, filling the glass atrium of the Galleria at Lafayette Centre with dogs of all sizes, shapes, and barks. Ever animal-friendly, the group invited guests to bring their dogs along for a sampling of champagne and desserts from local pastry chefs.

“Its not your typical Thursday night,” said Humane Society director of marketing and communications Tara de Nicolas. “But it’s great because it’s the same people you normally see, but now they can bring their dogs.” MORE >>

Audiovisual Production: "Nomad Event Systems has been been a faithful and talented partner of ours for the past year. When we planned our first fashion show, 'Fashion for Paws' [in April at the French Embassy], Nomad stepped in to help us. They taught us the art of designing a fashion show, from the catwalk to the lights to the sound. And thanks to Nomad, everything was flawless."

Photography: "Our talented photographers capture the magic and the unique style of our events: Zaid Hamid, Joseph Allen, and Stephen Bobb. Thanks to their brilliant photography skills, our events have received a lot of attention in the press, and print media has been able to use their photos in magazines and newspapers. It is not easy to take gorgeous photos of our guests and their dogs at the same time—the dogs always seem to have another plan in mind that does not include posing for the camera." MORE >>

To plan June 9’s Bark Ball, the Washington Humane Society’s director of special events, Stacey Kranitz, tried to get inside a dog’s head. “We always have to put the dogs first,” Kranitz said of the black-tie gala for animal-lovers and their dogs, held at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. When choosing a dessert for the evening, Kranitz couldn’t pick anything with chocolate, which is dangerous to dogs. Instead, she served vegan and vegetarian entrées for the humans and provided organic treats, doggy ice cream, and a 20th-anniversary Bark Ball cake by Barkley Square Gourmet Dog Bakery for the pups.
