Fight Night and Knock Out Abuse Parties Offer Boxing for the Guys, Firemen for the Women

Last night was a throwback to the Washington of another era—on one end of town, the boys had their fun, while on the other, the girls had theirs. The men’s-only Fight Night filled up the Hilton Washington, while the female-friendly Knock Out Abuse Against Women gala took over the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.—and both rallied for their own causes.

With 2,000 men in tuxes dominating the hotel’s ballroom, the 19th annual Fight Night raised money for the education and health care nonprofit Fight for Children. But the program itself was for grown-ups only. The starting silent auction reception, where sports memorabilia was plentiful (including a Joe DiMaggio-signed baseball and a Larry Bird-emblazoned basketball), also featured the Washington Nationals Nat Pack cheerleaders, on hand to debut the team’s new jerseys (and serve as arm candy). Athletes, Cheerleaders, and Mascots Flank SneakerBall

Mascots, cheerleaders, a marching band, and an abundance of D.C.’s professional athletes and Olympians swarmed the National Building Museum last Tuesday for SneakerBall, the annual gala and auction hosted by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, a nonprofit that attracts and promotes sporting events in the D.C. area. Many of the gala's 900 attendees adhered to the evening's playful dress code, accessorizing black-tie attire with (surprise, surprise) sneakers.

During the pre-dinner cocktail reception, servers circulated hors d'oeuvres such as tuna skewers and risotto bites and silent auction tables featured big-ticket sports items such as a basketball autographed by Kobe Bryant and a golf package with NFL Hall of Famer Darrell Green. Although fans congregated to take photos with Washington Redskins cheerleaders and team mascots, they were most excited to see local celebrity athletes such as Shawn Springs of the Redskins, Andray Blatche of the Washington Wizards, and Georgetown University basketball coach John Thompson. “People enjoy the proximity to the sports legends,” said Greater Washington Sports Alliance director of development Keri Ann Meslar, “so we put athletes at every [major] sponsor table during dinner.”

Ibiza Nightclub to Host Fund-Raiser for Redskins' Santana Moss

Football season doesn't officially begin until August, but this weekend Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss is hosting events to benefit his youth-oriented eponymous foundation.

The festivities begin Friday night with the Santana Moss Celebrity White Party at massive nightclub Ibiza. Organized and catered by the club, the public event has a strict white-attire-only dress code to match the all-white decor and cocktails, courtesy of Smirnoff. Ibiza's staff dancers will also be donning white costumes for their aerial performances. Other NFLers slated to attend include brother Sinorice Moss of the New York Giants and Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans. Rapper Pete Rock is spinning in the club's V.I.P. rooftop terrace, while hip-hop producer Just Blaze is taking over music for the main room. MORE >>
