Sponsors and More Than 100,000 Guests Flood Safeway Barbecue Battle on Pennsylvania Avenue
|
The Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle launched in 1992 as a way to celebrate southerners Bill Clinton and Al Gore winning the presidential election. The festival, which opened its 17th edition along Pennsylvania Avenue on Saturday and Sunday, now sees around 100,000 visitors each year. And it’s truly a family affair, with activities for every age—from moon bounces to Ecco Domani-sponsored wine lounges—and even husband-and-wife teams joining the 150 volunteers. The eight-block-long event showcased 25 restaurants and food vendors, 50 barbecue teams, 20 sponsors and exhibitors, and a product sampling tent from title sponsor Safeway. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children.
“The fact that it is the largest annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs in D.C. really helps a lot because people just throw their hearts into it,” said Suzanne Tubis, vice president of publicity for the Safeway Barbecue Battle. “Attendees come down and are willing to do a little extra with volunteering or fund-raising. All kinds of different synergies happen there.”

While Candidates Head to Home States, D.C. Hosts Array of Smaller Election Night Parties
|
Although Washington is considered the epicenter of American politics on nearly any given day of the year, the nation's capital won't be squarely in the spotlight on election night. As we've reported, Barack Obama is throwing a big bash at Chicago's Grant Park tomorrow night, while John McCain will either be with supporters inside the Biltmore hotel in Phoenix or addressing reporters on the property's front lawn, as the Associated Press reported last week.
However, D.C. is not without its celebrations, albeit without the presidential candidates' presence. Events ranging from public parties to exclusive V.I.P. affairs will take place in town tomorrow night as the results of the historic campaign roll in.

Athletes, Cheerleaders, and Mascots Flank SneakerBall
|
Mascots, cheerleaders, a marching band, and an abundance of D.C.’s professional athletes and Olympians swarmed the National Building Museum last Tuesday for SneakerBall, the annual gala and auction hosted by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, a nonprofit that attracts and promotes sporting events in the D.C. area. Many of the gala's 900 attendees adhered to the evening's playful dress code, accessorizing black-tie attire with (surprise, surprise) sneakers.
During the pre-dinner cocktail reception, servers circulated hors d'oeuvres such as tuna skewers and risotto bites and silent auction tables featured big-ticket sports items such as a basketball autographed by Kobe Bryant and a golf package with NFL Hall of Famer Darrell Green. Although fans congregated to take photos with Washington Redskins cheerleaders and team mascots, they were most excited to see local celebrity athletes such as Shawn Springs of the Redskins, Andray Blatche of the Washington Wizards, and Georgetown University basketball coach John Thompson. “People enjoy the proximity to the sports legends,” said Greater Washington Sports Alliance director of development Keri Ann Meslar, “so we put athletes at every [major] sponsor table during dinner.”
