Star Trek Talent Travels Through Delta-Shaped Step-and-Repeat
|
FROM LOS ANGELES
With a new director and a fresh cast, the rebooted Star Trek film marks the next—and some say cooler—generation of the sci-fi series that launched more than 40 years ago. In a move befitting the revamped franchise, Paramount's Elizabeth Tramontozzi went for a sleek rather than geek aesthetic for Thursday night’s premiere and after-party.
For the arrivals area, Tramontozzi turned to 15/40 Productions, which blanketed the street and entrance outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre with black carpet and stationed a DJ next to bleachers full of fans. The production company took an, ahem, enterprising approach to the step and repeat, building a massive replica of the delta—the arrowhead-shaped shield that adorns all Starfleet uniforms—and covering it with the film’s title treatments and posters. The movie’s stars traversed the giant structure, which served the dual purpose of accommodating extensive press lines, as well as giving fans various vantage points of talent as they zigzagged their way around the shield.

Greek Theme and Warm Temps Accent Scaled-Back Opera Gala
|
Saturday night offered appropriately balmy weather for the Washington National Opera’s Midwinter Gala at the Mellon Auditorium. The theme of the evening, after all, was the Greek city of Thessaloniki, which is known for its stunning waterfront. “In February, people like to focus on things warm and sunny, so we thought of Greece and the beaches as being cheery and uplifting,” said WNO special events manager Deana Taylor. “We also wanted something that was radically different from last year’s Taj Mahal theme.”

For its fourth annual “Turn Up the Heat” benefit on Tuesday night, the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance once again turned to women chefs of the Washington area to donate both time and food. More than 300 guests—who paid $250 per ticket—sampled hors d’oeuvres, main dishes, and desserts, prepared by more than 50 chefs whose stations circled the ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton. Each year, with a bounty of cuisine but minimal decor, the number of guests and cooks has increased.

Alice Waters's Minimalist Inaugural Dinners Bring Together Country's Culinary Stars
|
A frigid wind was not the only driving force on Embassy Row last night as sustainable agriculture guru Alice Waters brought together the superstars of the culinary world to produce an “Inaugural Supper” for 175 guests at the Phillips Collection and for groups of 22 to 40 guests in 11 private homes across the city.
In six short weeks, with the capital in planning overdrive, Waters and the staff of her restaurant, Chez Panisse, in Berkeley, California, recruited dozens of Washington-area volunteers, rented a venue (when most were spoken for), secured food and drink donations from sponsors, hired a noted caterer, and staged an eco-organic event-called “Art. Food. Hope.” that honored the new president and benefited local food banks.

Lollapalooza Adds More Stages—and a Beer Garden—to This Year's Sold-Out Festival

FROM CHICAGO
For Chicago's fourth-annual Lollapalooza, which took over Grant Park Friday through Sunday, festival organizers C3 Presents from Austin, Texas, offered a smorgasboard of choices for music—not to mention art and beer—lovers. Eight stages featured performances by 120 acts running concurrently over three days, while new distractions abounded, from Perry's, an electronica stage named after festival founder Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction, to Lederhosen's Biergarten, a popular stop for brews and brats.
The sheer size of Grant Park coupled with the diverse array of acts—mash-up wizard Girl Talk, gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, and headliners like Wilco, Radiohead, and Nine Inch Nails—could make getting the lay of the land difficult for any concertgoer. However, several helpful tools were on hand, such as pocket-sized official schedules, a centrally located information tower, and hordes of volunteers holding "Fest Info—Ask Me Now" signs. This is the first time Lollapalooza has sold out all three days in Chicago, with crowds upwards of 75,000 attending each day.

With Plenty of Sponsors, Lollapalooza Set to Take Over Chicago This Weekend
|
FROM CHICAGO
The current incarnation of Lollapalooza, the brainchild of Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, along with Austin, Texas-based promoters C3 Presents and the William Morris Agency, will once again set up shop in Chicago's Grant Park this Friday through Sunday. The fourth-annual Chicago-only festival encompasses 120 acts (including Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and Kanye West) performing on eight sponsored stages, as well as various environments, lounges, and activities scattered throughout the park.
Lollapalooza 2008 incorporates several new elements this year, including Perry's, named for Farrell, an open-air electronica stage featuring live DJ sets each day at 2 p.m., and Lederhosen's Biergarten, a beer hall situated near Buckingham Fountain. Both Green Street (a destination space educating festival-goers about Lolla's eco-friendly initiatives) and Kidzapalooza (featuring a stage, "School of Rock" Jam Tent, a recording studio, and special performances) are returning this year.

|
Each summer for the last 42 years, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival has turned the National Mall into a massive outdoor cultural celebration reaching over seven city blocks. This year, the event, organized with the help of more than 500 Smithsonian staffers and 300 volunteers, is celebrating the isolated mountain Kingdom of Bhutan, the 50th anniversary of NASA, and the music and cuisine of Texas.
Kicking off tomorrow, the festival runs through June 29 and from July 2-6, offering everything from an evening concert of the Texas Songsters to Bhutanese momos (or pork-and cheese-filled dumplings) to screenings of classic space films (think 2001: A Space Odyssey) at the nearby National Museum of Natural History.
Co-sponsored by the National Park Service, with support from Motorola, Sprint, WAMU-FM, Whole Foods Market, and Washingtonpost.com, the festival is expected to attract more than one million visitors throughout its 10-day run. —Adele Chapin
