| A Bilevel Eatery and Event Space From Busboys and Poets Owner |
|
| On May 15, restaurateur Andy Shallal opened the 290-seat Eatonville restaurant, directly across the street from his 14th Street lagship, Busboys and Poets. Bilevel Eatonville takes its name from Eatonville, Florida, the first all-black incorporated town in the U.S., and the interior decor honors the town’s noted citizen, author Zora Neale Hurston. |

On the ground level, the 180-seat Gallery dining room has soaring two-story ceilings accented by exposed air ducts and crystal chandeliers. Walls and columns are covered with a series of colorful urban and impressionist murals by local artists. Seating includes a mix of booths and tables as well as a 10-seat communal table, which faces the open kitchen.
Upstairs, the chocolate-colored Zora’s Loft has a small bar and a 40-seat lounge outfitted with a casual collection of antique and modern furniture, and features a playful repeated portrait of Hurston along one wall. Beyond the lounge, there’s a 60-seat semiprivate dining room with a rock waterfall.
The menu is Southern-inspired with an emphasis on seafood—think hush puppies with rock shrimp and leek fondue and Creole sauce—which may accompany the house signature cocktail, the mint julep.
In fair weather, a 40-seat patio provides additional space at Eatonville, which is available for both full and partial buyouts.
