| Revamp of D.C. Armory on the Horizon? |
|
Washington could be getting a new large-scale venue, reincarnated from an old one. The D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission has set its sights on revamping the D.C. Armory, down the street from the new Nationals Park.
According to The Examiner, the commission is looking to avoid financial problems by overhauling the 68,000-square-foot, 10,000-seat space, which has been home to the city’s National Guard and has hosted events ranging from inaugural balls to circuses. The commission plans to upgrade the armory with air-conditioning and improved bathroom facilities, making the venue better equipped to function as a concert hall and expo center.
Of course, those changes could cost the already-shrinking commission as much as $6.5 million. DCist has commented on the city’s need for a new large-scale music venue as an alternative to some of the more traditional spaces such as the DAR Constitution Hall, but Ward 6 councilman Tommy Wells is wary of the plan, telling the Examiner, “I’m not really interested in a 10,000-person nightclub.”
