OVERVIEW
Unlike the more traditional buildings on the National Mall, the cylindrical Hirshhorn Museum floats above four acres of garden space. The third-floor galleries, with views of the plaza and Mall, seat 100; the entire museum holds 1,000. An outdoor plaza surrounding the museum—and featuring a fountain that shoots four stories high—increases the capacity to 3,000. Warmer months allow access to the sculpture garden, which houses 60 pieces of contemporary art.
