Stephen Colbert makes fun of Washington every night on The Colbert Report, but on Friday, Beltway insiders turned the tables at the 20th annual Roast for Spina Bifida. The Comedy Central mock news anchor took abuse from M.C. Mark Shields and roasters Senator Orrin Hatch, D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, White House press secretary Dana Perino, and Representative Rahm Emanuel, President-elect Barack Obama's new chief of staff, who all joined forces for what Emanuel called a “night full of insults, snarky comments about each other, and name-calling.” In between barbs, guests watched highlights of memorable moments from the Report, including clips of Colbert’s run-ins with Holmes, Norton, and Emanuel.

Decor: "We’ve worked with Capital Decor and Events for the last three or four years. They’re amazing—not just at florals, but with the entire decor and helping to theme the entire event. Kelly Jenkins is very creative and listens well. We come to him with a vague theme in mind and he comes up with these totally amazing ideas. He’ll give us a laundry list of a million things to do, then lets us pick and choose—and doesn’t get offended when we want to tweak something. He has a fabulous, funky warehouse—you think you’re totally lost when you get there. Opening at noon, the cup is expecting some 450 attendees and 25 volunteers.
Six sponsors, including Capitol File, Harper's Bazaar, and Veuve Clicquot, are hosting teams, while the Mandarin Oriental is setting up the official after-party for 200 Cup guests. The site will offer two large stages and a 3,000-person dance tent featuring DJ sets from Moby and Steve Lawler. Officials Now Predicting 4 Million Inaugural Spectators

How many people can the National Mall accommodate? That's the question District and federal officials are asking themselves as they gear up for what is expected to be the largest inaugural crowd in history. The Washington Post reported today that officials are now preparing for as many as 4 million people, a crowd three to four times larger than previous big events on the Mall.

The best viewing area for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Barack Obama will be the ticketed space, closest to the U.S. Capitol, for 240,000 people. For the masses, officials are planning extra JumboTrons on the 300-acre, two-mile-long Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue parade route. "The Mall actually may be the best seat in the house. ... It'll kind of be like the world's biggest stage and auditorium on January 20th," Mayor Adrian Fenty told The Post. In addition, they are considering opening a three-block area east of the Washington Monument to the public that in the past has been used to stage the parade.

NEWS: Obama Election Calls for a Ball With an Aloha Theme

Come January 20, the ever popular Texas Black Tie and Boots Ball will not be the hottest ticket in town. But Washington event planners may face a run on grass skirts and a spike on orders for pupu platters. Hawaii, the birthplace of President-elect Barack Obama, will be a logical inspiration for decor for at least the next four years.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee for the 44th president of the United States has not yet been established. But already one still-unsanctioned ball has embraced an Hawaiian theme and sold-out all 750 tickets. Organizers of the Hawaii State Society Ball, with a budget of $250,000, have booked a ballroom at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Southwest Washington, The Washington Post reported. Ball chairman Micah Kohono Mossman, a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton, has requested Asian-Pacific foods and island music. Planning is still under way for leis and, perhaps, a waterfall.

NEWS: Spina Bifida Association Announces Roast Roster

The Spina Bifida Association of America announced the roster for its November 14 celebrity roast of Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert. The Examiner reported yesterday that political heavies like White House press secretary Dana Perino, House Democratic Caucus chairman Rahm Emanuel, Senator Orrin Hatch, and D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton all made the list of roasters taking rhetorical jabs at the Colbert Report host.

According to Spina Bifida Association C.E.O. Cindy Brownstein, these roasters were chosen because of their association with Colbert—particularly his history of making jokes at their expense on his own show. She confesses that it wasn’t very hard to find participants looking to turn the tables on the political satirist.

The 20th annual Spina Bifida roast, which will be held at the Hilton Washington will also feature an auction for a travel package for two to the 2009 Masters Tournament and a raffle for a 2008 Lexus RX 400h to benefit the association. Tickets are $500 per person, but the association is offering a discounted price of $350 to first-time attendees.

NEWS: Election Night Events Host Pelosi and (Waxen) Obama

Although the media's focus was on the presidential candidates' election night festivities in Chicago and Phoenix, Washingtonians did throw a few parties of their own.
Steps away from the U.S. Capitol at the Hyatt Regency Washington, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee held its "Election Watch Party," featuring Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on stage with U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida. Some 800 guests—mostly Democratic insiders and members of the media—converged in the Hyatt's ballroom, where a patriotic stage was festooned with flags and flanked by two projection screens with continuous voter returns coverage. As we've reported, Barack Obama is throwing a big bash at Chicago's Grant Park tomorrow night, while John McCain will either be with supporters inside the Biltmore hotel in Phoenix or addressing reporters on the property's front lawn, as the Associated Press reported last week.

However, D.C. is not without its celebrations, albeit without the presidential candidates' presence. Events ranging from public parties to exclusive V.I.P. affairs will take place in town tomorrow night as the results of the historic campaign roll in.
