Cipriani 42nd Street has hosted some pretty big entertainment acts--Run-DMC at the Gotham magazine launch and the O'Jays at the O magazine anniversary party come to mind--but the Breast Cancer Research Foundation brought in one of the mega-stars of the music world for its annual spring gala. Sir Elton John serenaded the sold-out crowd as a special favor for the events' co-chairs Elizabeth Hurley, Evelyn and Leonard Lauder and Linda Stein.

The event had a groovy go-go lounge look, which was put together by Monroe Alechman of Estee Lauder and DeVinn Bruce of H. DeVinn Visual. The decor was a mesmerizing sight: Black and white geometric-patterned tablecloths and polka-dotted chair slipcovers were a lively backdrop for the saturation of candy-colored light that Bentley Meeker set up. The unusual table centerpieces consisted of silver steel globes and small acrylic vases filled with red gerbera daisies held together by a sheet of clear plastic with the same design of the tablecloth. Round black and white balloons were suspended above the dining area.

Each table setting had a pair of plastic sunglasses and a card with instructions for the guests to don them when John took the stage and to sing along (although we wonder if he really appreciated a back-up chorus of 850). The event raised $2.8 million for the foundation.
