Two major hotel chains are coming to Alexandria. Westin is unveiling a 319-room property, slated to open on November 1, while Kimpton Hotels recently broke ground on a smaller project due for early 2009.
The Westin Alexandria, five miles from Reagan National Airport, will house the Jamieson Grille, an American restaurant headed by executive chef Nadine Thomas, in addition to the Trademark Bar, a wine bar named after the oh-so-close U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. The hotel has 20,000 square feet of flexible event space, including a 24-hour business center with on-site audiovisual support from Presentation Services. It also has a 7,901-square-foot ballroom (Alexandria's largest), which seats 600 for banquets. The Starwood Hotels-owned property is across the street from a federal courthouse and will offer a block of specialty rooms as workstations for lawyers who are in trial. The rooms can have desks brought in, filing systems, phone lines, and special catering menus. (Another Starwood property, the Wilmington Sheraton, is adjacent to a courthouse and has created a similar system.)
Construction has just begun on the yet-to-be-named Kimpton Hotel, which will enlist the design help of the Boston-based DSF Group and designer Vincente Wolf. The $50 million project will have a large spa, an upscale restaurant and more casual wine bar, and 3,000 square feet of meeting space, including two boardrooms. The hotel will also have a hospitality suite in the penthouse with its own outdoor terrace.
In related news, another new Kimpton-owned property in Alexandria, the Hotel Monaco (which we told you about here), has pushed back its opening to December.
