The awards-season ceremony has been cloned so many times in recent years that even a presenter at a relatively recent addition was confused. At AARP’s “Movies for Grownups” awards at the Hotel Bel-Air on Tuesday, Martin Sheen quipped that he thought the group was honoring “those paid movie channels at the Holiday Inn.” Au contraire. It was a rare night in Hollywood when being over 50 rocked, and well-ripened stars such as Mickey Rooney, Kathy Bates, and Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza were given their due, if not actual awards. One of those honors went to another over-50 actress, Lassie, who showed up to accept the “Best Movie for Grownups Who Refuse to Grow Up” award for her eponymous film. Caroline Graham of C4 Consulting, who seems to know everyone in town, made the gathering for 200 feel more like a chummy dinner party than a stuffy awards event by creating tables with seating place cards in addition to table assignments.
