Narmada Winery: An Indian-Themed Place for a Day Trip

Walter Nicholls
December 1, 2009
Virginia’s, and arguably the nation’s, first Indian-themed winery opened November 20 after nearly a decade of planning. Owned by Mumbai natives Sudha and Pandit Patil, the 55-acre Narmada Winery in Amissville (60 miles from Washington) has 15-acres of grapes established in rolling hills with bucolic views of rural Rappahannock County. In addition to their own wines, the Patils serve a menu of Indian foods and offer multiple spaces for events.

The spacious 3,600-square-foot tasting room has shimmering green metallic walls, a massive floor-to-ceiling white marble wood-burning fireplace, contemporary leather sofas and high-top tables and chairs, and composite stone floors. Against one wall, a custom 30-foot bar is topped with an epoxy surface inlaid with peacock feathers and gold glitter. Paintings depicting the culture of northern India cover the walls. Additional amenities include a 48-inch flat-screen TV, a catering kitchen, and a retail area with clothing and jewelry from the homeland. The space holds 100 for receptions and can be combined with an outdoor deck that holds 50. Below the tasting room, the winery’s production area and barrel room has space for more than 200 guests.

For outdoor events, Narmada has a 4.5-acre lake and a lakeside pavilion with a fireplace, which holds 40, as well as ample space for tents. The venue is available for full or partial buyout.
