ENTERTAINMENT: Latin-Flavored Guitarist

October 29, 2001, 12:00 AM EST

Guitarist Tomas Rodriguez plays a soulful, eclectic mix of music that blends music genres and playing styles. The American musician learned to play from flamenco guitarists in Spain (where his father is from) and from Brazilian musicians here in New York. His resulting style incorporates classical, bossa nova, tango and jazz influences. He performs well known Brazilian songs like “The Girl from Ipanema,” as well as more obscure Brazilian pieces from the 40's. And he gives “The Way You Look Tonight” a Latin feel, and plays “Misty” with a Cuban rhythm. He can perform as part of a duo or trio, or he can bring in a band of musicians to create a festive, lively ambiance. (We saw him do a great set at the Travel & Leisure event at Gracie Mansion.) --Chad Kaydo
