“We don't have a choice on whether we do social media. The choice is how well we do it.” That was Erik Qualman's argument at Elevate D.C., the BizBash and Eventbrite conference held at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., on July 10. The author of Socialnomics—and the event's keynote speaker—explained that the rapid growth of digital platforms such as social media sites are augmenting live experiences, making word of mouth now “world of mouth” and an organization's digital presence more important than ever. Qualman also offered his 12 tips to digitize events and meetings, including creating a lasting hashtag and assigning a point person to manage social media activity before, during, and after a gathering.
