NEW YORK One unusual.phpect at the opening party of the Bodum Cafe & Homestore in Chelsea was a simple, help-yourself fondue setup on the cafe bar. The tasty, throwback treat also helped show off the store's products: Bodum barware was filled with strawberries, .phpberries and grapes, and Bodum's sleek, stainless steel fondue pot was filled with warm chocolate dipping sauce. Disposable wooden skewers were set out for individual tastings. The event was catered by Aquavit, who supplemented the fondue with delectable hors d'oeuvres. The famed restaurant has also teamed up with Bodum to offer simple Scandinavian fare (similar to the AQ Cafe menu in the Scandinavia House) in the cafe portion of the store.
Bodum, a Danish company mostly known for its coffee and tea presses, threw the party for members of the press and Danish consulate to celebrate the opening of its first retail store in the U.S. This was the first event we attended following the World Trade Center attacks, and found the atmosphere celebratory in subdued way. In his opening remarks, Bodum USA president Nils Lindblad said, “It is difficult to be here, but we are proud to be part of the New York environment,"--a remark that appeared to touch several partygoers.
