Gen Art Gets Hoaxed

Apparently nonprofit arts foundation Gen Art was the victim of an event scam. New York magazine's Intelligencer column reports that the curators hired to bring real art to the event made up 10 of the 14 artists featured in the group's Summer Arts Festival at the Puck Building, and they even had pie-throwing faux activists protesting some of the work. Although Gen Art organizers insisted to New York's reporter that all of the artists were real, co-curator Jay Sanders confirmed the hoax, saying, “It seemed like the best thing to do, since we felt like Gen Art was just asking us to provide props for their party.” When we checked out the opening night party, the crowds of twentysomethings did looked more interested in dancing than looking at any of the art--but now we wonder: Did they just show up for the open bar, or did they see past the fake art?
