Special Election Night Report

How much fun you have at an election night party really depends on whether your candidate is winning. So it's pretty easy to say Hillary Rodham Clinton's party at the Grand Hyatt bested Rick Lazio's bum bash at the Roosevelt. When we stopped by the Republican's shindig, fairly early in the night, things looked pretty grim, and no one had much use for the pompoms the GOPers handed out.

It was nothing like the excitement at the Hyatt. Having the president in the building on such a big night certainly helped, and the Secret Service made the event even more complicated. Getting anywhere near the event required going through a metal detector and bag check. Inside, we noticed that in addition to the added excitement of her win, Hillary had a lot more balloons and confetti than Lazio.

Choosing venues was a long process for both candidates: As we reported earlier, Lazio had looked for his own Midtown spot, but later decided to go with the venue chosen by his state Republican party cronies. (And the Roosevelt is named for GOPer Teddy, not Dem FDR, by the way.) And Hillary kept several venues on hold before choosing her Midtown location.

Despite their differences, the opposing parties shared one thing: Both charged $7 for cocktails.

Other events: Michael Bloomberg, Tina Brown and Harvey Weinstein hosted the usual Miramax crew at Elaine's...The Creative Coalition held a night of comedy at Caroline's with Joy Behar, Arianna Huffington, A. Whitney Brown and host Billy Baldwin, the group's president. The light menu included appetizers, wings and desserts...The Americana Project hosted a night of readings downtown at Fez...The American Indian College Fund held its Flame of Hope gala benefit at the Pierre.
