Laden with a mixture of Baroque and modern elements, Amalia is a new restaurant and lounge adjacent to the Dream Hotel. The street-level bar leads to an 88-seat dining room (pictured) upholstered with hand-painted silk chinoiserie wallpaper and decorated with Renaissance-style paintings on the ceiling. The feminine character of the dining floor, in shades of blue, taupe, and gold, gives way to a more masculine feel downstairs at the D’Or, where the palette switches to chocolate, cognac, and gold. The lower level, which has its own entrance and seats 48 in the dining area and holds 150 in the lounge, juxtaposes natural stone floors and arched entryways with delicate chandeliers and a metal ceiling covered with abstract images. Named for Sigmund Freud’s mother, the 7,000-square-foot venue in Midtown holds a total of 500, and the menu from executive chef Ivy Stark is heavy on coastal Mediterranean influences. —Anna Sekula
